I am expansive… Bat Country in tandem with Proximity Effect presents “Hard On Life” // Performed by @shortygeeski / @shortydashgee We want [the music] to slap. I know a lot about music that moves people from growing up in Oakland, Ca. The integrity of your bass will make or break a track where I’m from, hot lyrics or not. So it’s imperative to me that the soundscape of the series is authentic to who I am and the type of music I like to create. I want my music to electrify people and make them feel like they’re listening to a movie, so we take big risks with experimental sounds and dramatic background noises. I even give the background characters their own moments to really flesh out the world being created around this story. My team and I used certain musical motifs to introduce moments that push the story forward like during the second half of ‘Lemon Meringue I : Hard on Life’. When the synth comes in during: “Oh no. there she goes. Quick uh oh, time to go…” the audience (and me) float away into the stars and it creates an atmosphere of pure harmony. Sometimes I feel hopeless… Bat Country in tandem with Proximity Effect presents “Lemon Meringue I” // Performed by @shortygeeski / @shortydashgee Lemon Meringue explores how we deal with our emotions when tasked with the cyclical nature of our trauma. Have you ever been to prison inside your mind? The mind is endless and takes us to places we can only dream of. How do we cope when it feels like our mind is winning beating us? We live our lives. We live every day one at a time. We celebrate the wins, grieve the losses, and learn something new every time. We explore the wonder, depth, and dexterity that is being human. We have our pie and eat it too. For me, it’s a pie. Life has layers and different complexities that lie in the details. The proof is in the pudding (custard, if you will). After letting it bake in the oven at just the right temperature, I thought it best be shared fresh and in the company of friends and family. The cynical nature of the pie also represents the hero’s journey or the challenges we’re tasked with on the road to greatness and how we react to them. I want people to know, even if life has dealt you a shitty hand, you can make that into something. No matter what has happened, you can always make something of yourself. Be the hero in your own story, and do it bold. Make a statement stand out. Orange in a field of blue. Lemon in a cloud of white. Sometimes I feel compelled to act on my negative thoughts… Bat Country in tandem with Proximity Effect presents “WWYD” // Performed by @shortygeeski / @shortydashgee I think each song stands on its own because they’re big. Each song is a very bold statement with character-driven moments that draw the audience in and force them to listen to the stories and their underlying meanings. There are moments like the title moment in ‘WWYD’ when Shorty-G asks “what would you do if niggas took you to the roof huh? Would you panic, would you jump off, would you shoot huh?” Moments like this invite the audience to engage with and appreciate the intricacies of each song on the project. …Which leads me to feel hopeless again… Bat Country in tandem with Proximity Effect presents “Lemon Meringue II” // Performed by @shortygeeski / @shortydashgee The name of the first beat Sahej sent me was Lemon Meringue, and I knew immediately that would be the name. I knew that before I knew anything else. It reminds me of the saying “When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.” In the case of this story, life gave Shorty-G lemons and she made Lemon Meringue. My long-term supporters know lemons and citrus are a large part of my overall brand because to me they represent sustenance and abundance. They’re also a reminder of the difference in varying perspectives because lemons aren’t for everyone. When I think of Lemon Meringue pie I think of a pie created with people like me in mind. Those of us who love the wonders of a buttery crust, the depths of a tangy fruit custard, and the dexterity of the toasted meringue to top it all off. A purple (well…yellow actually) cow amongst the mundane flavors of our everyday assortment of baked confections. …Sometimes I feel conflicted… Bat Country in tandem with Proximity Effect presents “God Said” // Performed by @shortygeeski / @shortydashgee This project wouldn’t have been possible without the power of collaboration. I exhausted every single avenue I could to create this body of work, because I knew it was worthwhile to invest my time and energy into a piece I am so passionate about. My team was beyond helpful, and the best thing about all of it is: They believed in me. They listened to my outlandish ideas and my dramatic concept directions and they helped me create a tangible piece of art that captures an idea that used to live inside my head. They’ve helped my follow my dreams and they have been instrumental in the process, because I believe art is a pie best served with friends. Don’t worry. It gets bigger.
