Quick question for my friends here.

When you look at this image, are you the kind of person who is immediately reminded of the scene during the Battle of Beth-Zechariah, where the elephant collapses on top of Eleazar the Averan and kills him?

Or are you more the “what the hell - what is that weirdarse creature? Looks like a horse and an anteater had a baby. And those three guys in the boat-thing on its back - are they just heads? Or are they really weirdly proportioned dwarves or something? And why is that guy lying there with his eyes closed and his mouth open - oh please God tell me they’re not doing what it looks like they’re doing -,” kind of person? by @bdcwriting

I love old stuff. This is an old herbal - guess what plants

The first one is Rhubarb. It’s pretty useful, but the main thing is not to confuse it with the similar-looking Bastard Rhubarb. The two main kinds of Bastard Rhubarb are depicted below. The larger variety is called Great Bastard Rhubarb and the smaller is, sensibly, Small Bastard Rhubarb.

Small Bastard was usually less than a foot tall, while Great Bastard could reach three feet. Both flowered in late summer. There was a less common plant that flowered earlier and could reach almost the height of a full grown man. I refer, of course, to Great Spanish Bastard Rhubarb. by @bdcwriting

Turned up five hours late (for my day shift). Luckily, this worked out better for everyone and I am able to leave five hours late (from my evening shift).

I love reading very old stuff and this is a line from a hymn from ancient Babylon, four thousand years ago.

It’s your usual old Middle Eastern religious text - all about beer and sex - but it did contain one line I really liked :

“You raise your hand in greeting like a crab”

Anyway - that’s how I’m doing it from now on.

ADDIT: I stopped reading stuff I loved about five years ago and now I’ve started again, and I really strongly recommend doing going back, and discovering or rediscovering things you love, and trying them out again. This can be a wonderful life.

A friend of mine got the very good news that her wife was pregnant. They’ve never had kids so I’ve preparing some helpful “what is motherhood like?” presentations based on the real world experiences of first time mothers.

Why not decorate your home or garfen with these stylish plant holders?

I mean, besides the fact that they make you look like some hideous monster from a serial killer movie. by @bdcwriting

Above all else it is important to be gracious in victory, and show others the respect we would wish to be shown ourselves. We must at all times extend to our honored opponents the dignity due their office…

Anyway, here’s Peta Credlin from last night. Ninety four percent by bodyweight bile duct. She’s been angry and contemptuous since before she was born - angry embryo, furious fetus, born bitter and already thinking how we should go back to the good old days in the Fallopian tube.

I dont know what she’s thinking - something along the lines of how much we’ve disappointed her. I’m sure we’ll find out soon.

But I hope that tonight, maybe, just for a moment, she can feel that Australia and Australians are better and smarter than she’s always assumed - and I hope it gives her pause. by @bdcwriting

Election Day.

You all know where I stand. But look at this - it’s a femur, the big bone in your leg. It was broken - we dont know how - and it healed. The person lived a good few years more. They were healthy, they walked around - with a limp, they were protected from further harm. This person, from two and half thousand years ago, survived what would otherwise have been a fatal injury because of one thing only.

Community. Call it civilisation, or society, or folk, it’s the people around you and the strength and stability they bring. They’re here when you need them and you’re there when they need you. The strong care for the weak.

The first sign of civilisation is when they do this stuff.

The first - or maybe the last - sign of its loss is when they don’t.

Anyway. It’s your election, do whatever you want, up to you. It’s your choice.

Medicare. Public housing, public health. Public roads and public schools, national parks, state libraries. The right to live as if you’re worth something - workcover and welfare when you need it, weekends and work from home. If you’re hurt, you can heal, because you’re worth something, and when you’re healed, you can help others.

Or otherwise, the other thing. Selling our stuff to the rich. Billionaires buying newspapers, fascists filling Facebook. The homeless and the desperate and the sick. Hearing and saying the world is so hateful that the only answer is hate. Fear and rage and retreat from each other so we’re easy prey to extremists of any kind.

The bone that broken, does not heal.

Your life. Your choice. Vote left. by @bdcwriting
