COMPOUND interest is interest that’s calculated on both the original amount of money and the interest that has already been added.
Simple way to think about it
• Simple interest: You earn interest only on the original amount.
• Compound interest: You earn interest on the original amount plus past interest.
Example
Imagine you put $100 in a bank account with

10% interest per year.
• Year 1:
$100 + 10% = $110
• Year 2:
10% of $110 = $11 → total = $121
• Year 3:
10% of $121 = $12.10 → total = $133.10 by @bdray_
