About three years ago I got a sweet deal on some live edge maple slabs from @windwood_llc …the catch was that they were freshly milled and needed a few years to dry out. Fast forward to last week when I got inspired to make a floating bookshelf with an organic vibe…despite several other projects that need to get completed. I figured I’d ride the inspiration momentum wave and was able to complete this project. Overall this was a pretty easy build, using dominoes and some hidden screws to assemble the frame, a back panel veneered with some beautiful curly maple veneers generously gifted to me from @gearedstudios , and then hung on the wall using a French cleat system (and four heavy duty bolts).

I know it’s bad practice to keep the bark on live edges due to the risk of it eventually falling off, but this project was for my living room and I like the whimsical vibe of the moss and bark. If it starts coming off it shouldn’t be too big of a deal to take it to the shop and get those edges cleaned up and varnished.

Overall I’m pretty stoked about how this turned out, and even more excited that I now have a proper place to show off these Stephen King hardbacks that were also an incredibly generous gift from @kaitlyncarrier If anything, this project reminded me that I’m lucky to know such amazing folk that are supportive of my passions and make me feel like a really lucky guy. Love y’all 😊

Recently completed this (admittedly silly) Nakashima-inspired cantilever side table. This was a really fun build because I got use castle joints to connect the pillar to base, and the pillar to the top supports, I think it’s a really cool way to connect three pieces of wood together. Base is made from some leftover Ash I had from another project (perpetually stuck at 90% complete) and the top is leftover Chestnut I’ve had lying around since building my workbench.

The Chestnut had some pretty extreme ring shake, and I decided to fill it in with some turquoise epoxy to make it a little more whimsical. Despite the epoxy adding several days to the build I’m pretty stoked with how it turned out. I’m considering building a drawer or shelf that will float under the top, and I miiiight change the shape of the top since I don’t love how the curve came out but we’ll see. Right now it’s living in my living room and reckon it’ll stay there for a few years at least.

I recently batched out a bunch of walnut picture frames to hang around the house, including one for a map from my favorite series The First Law @literarysewer

To make these I created the frame profiles on ~4’ strips and then batch cut the miters. I assembled them with CA glue and then reinforced with miter keys. Pictures are held in place between plexiglass and cardboard that I friction-fitted into the frame.

Excited to have all these memories hung around the house ☺️

Recently finished this chessboard and had a photo shoot in the spring sun and spring blooms. Made a few design changes from the last one that I like a lot.

As always, wood was locally sourced and milled by

A twenty minute glueup condensed to 70 seconds. This is a record player cabinet made out of Ash. I prefinished the interior to help with glue squeeze out and took advantage of the split top of my workbench to get clamping pressure on the backside. Overall the glueup wasn’t too bad, especially after gluing up the sub assembly in the middle. I used dominos to join the interior dividers and a rabbet joint to connect the sides to the top and bottom. Still a lot to do: two doors and two drawers and a base still need to be built, as well as finishing the exterior but excited to get this thing in the house :)

Autumn photoshoot with this recently completed chessboard. The squares are walnut and maple, with a walnut border inlaid with some beautiful flame-maple. All of the wood was locally sourced and processed by the always available @windwood_llc

I played around with a cool veneering pattern on the back of the board. The miters on the frame are reinforced with walnut splines and the whole thing was varnished with an oil-based, satin sheen polyurethane.

This board is going to be auctioned off at the South Sound Cancer Care Foundation’s Beer and Bites festival in a few weeks. The SCCF is a wonderful group of oncologists and medical professionals whose mission is to provide support for community oncology practices, and raise money to assist patients that need to rent housing while undergoing therapies that require them to be within a short drive to the clinic.

Wrapped up summer with an epic backpacking trip in the vast Canadian wilderness. Hike in was a very steep, very technical one, but worth it to have the lake and mountains to ourselves. by @bdwoodworkingpdx

Spent Independence Day circumventing Mount St Helens on the Loowit Trail. A bit of a death march at times, but the views, wildflowers, and time spent with my darlin’ was worth it. Also the volcano didn’t erupt which was as a big plus 😅 @strobes2
