Today, I’m doing the hard things first.

The stuff I keep putting off while it takes up more and more space in my head.

Working on my mental health means paying attention to how CPTSD and ADHD show up in my everyday life. For me, that includes getting overwhelmed, procrastinating, and then being hard on myself for falling behind.

Today I’m practicing a different response.

I can do hard things. I can ask for help. And I can start with one thing.

This is part of taking care of myself, too.

I’ve moved past the body dysmorphia I struggled with around my size and shape. But sometimes I still catch myself evaluating my body when I run.

I’ll watch hybrid athletes and runners on Instagram and start comparing how I look or how I move.

Then I pause and remember the life this body has lived.

My younger years laboring. Four years in the Marine Corps. A motorcycle accident. Years of lifting weights the wrong way. And a lifetime of carrying emotional weight that wasn’t always mine to carry.

Some of that still shows up in my posture and how I move.

When I give myself that context, I feel grateful. For what my body can still do. For everything I’ve learned. For the wisdom I carry now.

Those experiences helped lead me back to bodywork. My own healing journey has shaped how I listen, what I notice and how I care for the person on my table.

I’ve been working through this in different ways my whole life. Today, I’m proud of my body and the bodyworker I’ve become.

ON THE OUTSIDE / ON THE INSIDE

I guess I’ll start here.

A Marine. A young father. An entrepreneur.

I’ve built businesses, lost businesses and started over more than once.

I’ve worked in fitness, landscaping, wellness and the hair and beauty world alongside Regina. There was even a city job and a short stretch as a union laborer somewhere in there.

I wouldn’t change any of it.

Every road led me here.

And somehow, through all of it, I found my way back to bodywork.

Not because I had everything figured out.

Not because I was healed.

because I wasn’t.

Every one of those chapters looked a certain way from the outside.

What was happening on the inside was often very different.

There were times I looked strong, successful and completely in control.

I wasn’t.

And I think that’s the part of our stories we don’t talk about enough.

So I’m going to start talking about mine.

The good parts.
The hard parts.
The parts I’m proud of.
The parts I’m still making peace with.

Not to rewrite any of it.

And maybe, by being honest about mine, help you feel like you don’t have to pretend on the outside when something feels different on the inside.

On the outside.
On the inside.

Words I’ve heard from people on my table all the time.

My body has been achy. My sleep has been off. My energy has been low.

The opening move (sometimes)

Before deeper pressure. Before trying to change anything.

We were taught to begin at the head, make light contact at the occipital ridge, and wait.

They called it the 10th Cranial.

The science behind some of what I was taught has evolved. But the philosophy stayed with me:

Don’t just dive into someone’s body.
Introduce yourself to it.

I’m listening through my hands.

How are you breathing?
Where are you holding?
What feels guarded?
What begins to soften?

Sometimes I feel more by doing less.

Contact before correction.
Listen before asking.
Notice before changing.

When you receive bodywork, do you notice how your therapist begins?

Awareness works both ways.

I spend a lot of time noticing other people’s bodies. How they move, breathe, stand and carry themselves.

I’m learning that it’s just as important to notice my own.

Pay attention. Your body is always communicating.

People always ask me what kind of work I do.

It depends.

Some bodies need deeper work. Hands, elbows, forearms, pressure, movement.

Others need less force and more intention. Slower touch, energy work, space to settle.

Most need some combination of both.

I don’t have a formula.

Every body is different.
Every session is too.

It’s all about the energy✨
