🎃Happy Halloweeeeeen!!🎃 I hope you all had a lovely day celebrating in whatever way you chose, or not at all! 👻 Under the Stairs is not a particularly festive book for today, but I've got some last minute reading to do for this month's Buzzwordahon and the cover sure is perfect at least! 😍 And I'm enjoying the book so far! 😁 🎃Happy Halloweeeeeen!!🎃 Hello new multi-captions! My cosy reading is accompanied by this gorgeous cardigan I got from TK Maxx last Halloween! 😍 #tkmaxx #tkmaxxfinds #treasureseeker by @be_ca12
📝A Body in London by Michael G. Katakis📝 Massive thank you for this tour ❤️❤️ I enjoyed this book right from the start as we're introduced to our main character and investigator Thanatos Boyd through a letter discussing him and his backstory. Since the introduction is from a third party and Thanatos is a well-known yet very private person it's filled with facts but also talks about all the speculation about him that the writer cannot confirm or deny. It makes for a very intriguing way to meet him as we then get to know a bit more on the subjects later as we follow him through this very tricky case and try to figure him out for ourselves. Straight away once we get more into the story I was reminded of the Sherlock Holmes books. A very clever detective with some quirks, working in old London, helping Scotland Yard with their hardest cases and then a killer comes along leaving notes and taunting Thanatos that was reminiscent of Moriarty. You guys know how obsessed I am with Sherlock so I knew I was going to thoroughly enjoy this read! This book had a great cast of characters and although ending up fairly large, we're introduced to everyone gradually so it never feels overwhelming and we get to knew everyone and their backstories/links to Thanatos quite well. And Thanatos of course, although he may have done some dark things in the past, is an easily loveable character you'll be rooting for throughout (apart from just wanting our bad guy Makris to not win). I think I suspected pretty much everyone at one point or another, but the ending still managed to surprise me and I thought it truly was the perfect way to end their game of cat and mouse. by @be_ca12
🖌The Emerald Sketchbook by @hsellarajah🖌️ Big thank yous to @hyggebooktours and @parkvicpublishing too for this tour 💚 I don't often read historical books but I always love them when I do, and being a historical romance too (and I really love a romance) I adored this book. Right from the start I was hooked and fell in love with our main character Patricia as she returns to her home in India after studying in England. Only 17 but she is supposed to be engaged to Frederick (since it's 1920) but her father won't approve the marriage. He thinks they're not in love and he wants his daughter and her home in India to be adored by the man she will marry. I loved the contrast in men and seeing Patricia fall in love as we follow this difficult and confusing time in her life while she tries to decide and learn what she really wants in life but no spoilers. I'd forgotten this book was going to be dual timeline and I always love a dual timeline story! We also to see Patricia's granddaughter years later living in Dundee having discovered Patricia's emerald sketchbook that she also used as basically a journal. It was great seeing her story unfold back in the day and also seeing the long-term effects that decisions and things have on families for generations to come. I loved Helen's writing style, so descriptive which is great especially when reading a book set abroad because I could really picture the scenery which would have been harder for me having never been to India. It was lovely flowing writing that gripped me as the story unfolded and allowed me to really connect with our characters. A true pleasure to read! by @be_ca12
🍼Hidden by @theelizabethmiles🍼 Thank you for a copy to read and review and for writing this book! ❤️ This memoir follows a mother's journey helping her daughter through the aftermath of a cryptic pregnancy, and if you have no idea what that is you're not alone! I've only vaguely heard of it once and I can't even remember where. But it's a phenomenon where the pregnant woman herself doesn't even know that she's pregnant. Can you imagine the shock of going to hospital for stomach pains only to discover you're giving birth? No warning, no 9 months (or close to) of planning, prepping both mentally and physically, for the arrival of a child in your life? And especially at the age of 18 too with life plans ahead of you, all changed in an instant. I can't imagine how shocking and scary that would be! This memoir brings attention to how little this condition is understood, how some medical professionals are underprepared to deal with it, especially emotionally (although lots of them were great), and the wider world in general since it's so rare. It definitely needs more exposure so women can at least be somewhat prepared in knowing that it's a possibility, however unlikely. I really felt for India being pushed to make decisions when she just needs time to process. No hate to the organisations needing decisions to be made because of course every day no decision is mae that poor baby is a day older and these things can't be delayed forever. But also that doesn't make it any easier for India, and some of them definitely needed to be a bit more compassionate and sensitive to her situation. she's not just a normal 18 year-old who got pregnant too young and had the time to decide whether she wanted to keep the baby or not and arrange her life accordingly. And that is a VERY big decision to have to make with zero warning, and whilst recovering from the physical act of giving birth too. A very important message that will hopefully raise some much-needed awareness about this and I feel for anyone who's gone through this and their families because as we see here it's of course worst for the mother but also affects such a wide group of people too and it's such a shame. by @be_ca12
🕵️Assassins Can't Do It Alone by @shesh_author🕵️ Big thank you to @hyggebooktours and Shesh for this great tour and continuing the series 😍 This was another excellent book in the Corporate Assassins series that I'm loving so much! So sad I have to wait until sometime next year for the next book! We do indeed follow straight on from book 2, this time with a bit more of an in-depth recap from Ishmael for new joiners to the series, although we'd both still definitely recommend picking the others up first. The story this time went almost exactly how you'd expect (although that made it no less interesting or exciting!) but with a few unexpected twists and of course the journey is always the important part. I love the little team that Ishmael has "put together" to help him out and can't wait to see how that will work out in the future. This one did feel a little different to the previous books, because Ishmael started keeping secrets from us!! How dare he not fill us in on his whole plan as soon as he comes up with it! Only little bits though so I'll forgive him, and at least we find out what he's withholding before the end of the book. And are instead left with at least 35 thousand cliffhangers!! I need the next book immediately please Shesh! by @be_ca12
♟️Assassins are Our Greatest Assets by @shesh_author♟️ A massive thank you you to Shesh for a copy of this second book in the series to read ahead of my @hyggebooktours tour date for book 3 coming tomorrow! ❤️ It was great to be back with Ishmael to see more of the aftermath of book 1. This follows straight on but surprisingly could actually be read on its own, although neither Ishmael nor I recommend it. He is kind enough to briefly fill you in on some stuff though in case you missed it, and since it's all so recent it's still very relevant and talked about so you can technically pick up most of what you missed. But I really would recommend reading Sixty is the New Assassin first to get to know Ishmael and the other characters better and see how they got here. I knew better what to expect this time so I was thoroughly looking forward to diving back into Ishmael's world of corporate assassination but it did still manage to surprise me in places. Particularly that ending!! I didn't see that coming at all even though I guess there were hints looking back on it which is very cool. I loved the way this was written again, almost as if Ishmael is writing the book he's talking to the reader so you get to understand everything that he's thinking and his reasonings behind everything he does and it works so well for this story. A mix of serious and hilarious, Ishmael is a funny guy and it's definitely a fun read, but it does somehow also teach you important lessons about life and the corporate world (and how it's similar to assassination!). It's such a great concept that works amazingly well and I'm really excited to hear at the end that it's going to be a set of 5 books now rather than the originally planned 3! We once again end on a little bit of a cliffhanger but only in a sense that it sets you up perfectly for the next book to continue straight on, and that's exactly what I'll be doing! by @be_ca12
Love in a Hurry – Love & Mishaps Book 4 (standalone). Does anyone else eat Swizzels’ Love Hearts? For the flavour and fizz or the messages? Brought up in care, Miranda has never been loved by anyone—and fears she never will, which inspired these two sections in Love in a Hurry where she has a full-sized tube of Love Hearts rather than the mini ones in the image: She pictured the emergency supply of Love Hearts in her bag. She’d read they had similar ingredients to Rennies, but she’d never eaten them for indigestion. *** During the short drive to Lockleaze, Miranda dipped into her tube of Love Hearts. She glanced at the messages, including: “BE MINE”, “FOR EVER”, “LOVE YOU”, “BE HAPPY”, and “ALWAYS” before popping a sweet into her mouth, alternately sucking and crunching. But the fizz and jaw action didn’t calm her rapid heartbeat or regulate her quick, shallow breaths or loosen her strained grip on the wheel. How could they, when her whole future was at stake? As soon as she pulled up by his new home, Kieran opened the front door. She grabbed her bag as she scrambled out of the car. When she reached him, he kissed her tenderly. It was going to be all right, wasn’t it? His thumb wiped something from the corner of her mouth. ‘You taste of lemon.’ ‘I, er, had a sweet on the way.’ Or ten? Fifteen? *** Read Love in a Hurry to understand the heartbreaking reason behind Miranda's various coping mechanisms. You might like to have some Love Hearts to hand while you read! Thanks to @be_ca12 for her thoughtful Love Hearts image and to @swizzels_sweets for making them. mybook.to/6IEIHx #quirky #romcom #catholicpriestromance #emotional #heartwarming #funny by @be_ca12
♻️Honey's Helpful Hints by Anne and @moses_brian - Illustrated by @claire_f_lewis♻️ Thank you to @hyggebooktours and @hb_publishing_house for another lovely tour! 💚 This was a delightful and fun read, perfect for reading with the kids at bedtime or even throughout the day. As you can tell from the cover, it's about the cutest little dog called Honey who teaches kids about how to be more eco-friendly, joined by the neighbour's super cute poodle dog Jimmy. Don't worry, it doesn't go into explaining why recycling is so important which may be a bit too heavy for some of the youngest kids but let's you as parents explain that in whatever way is most appropriate and helps give some tips on things they can do that are good for the planet in a fun way that will make the kids want to join in and help Honey with the recycling or remembering to turn the lights off etc. I thought Honey was the perfect character to show this with a mix of tips and general doggy business that was both informative and funny. The illustrations too were absolutely gorgeous. Lovely calming watercolours in colours not too bright and overstimulating but colourful and cosy. by @be_ca12
🍼Love in a Hurry by @marijanelaw🍼 Massive thank you to @hyggebooktours and Mari for touring the 4th book in this great series 😍 Sorry I don't have any Rolos to hand but I surprisingly did have some emergency Love Hearts Miranda would like 💕 This book, as all the books in this series seem to be, was filled with humour and hard topics in equal measure. Definitely make sure to check the trigger warnings if you need, it was a seriously painful read at some points and I cried so be prepared. But for those comfortable then the heavier topics are interspersed with so much humour and hilarious interactions to lighten the mood. If you've read the previous books (and you definitely should, although not essential) you'll already love Miranda and know some of her recent history as I do and it was lovely to see her again as she gets her happy ending, especially because of her peculiar circumstances. We get to learn more about her past too and how hard her life was. I loved that Mari didn't try to glorify some of the aspects and make everything magically work out at the end, it makes the characters seem so much more real. Keiran is a new character to the series and it's great to see him finally break free and get to experience the life he wants for himself and not the one others want for him. Again, his journey out of priesthood seemed so real because it would take a lot of getting used to life outside of the church when that's all you've ever known. There were of course a few hiccups but he's a good person and no matter how weird the situations get you're always rooting for them to be able to make it work! I also loved Judith (despite her flaws) and the dual timeline story we got learning her past too, and such a sad tale. I felt so sorry for her and how her life turned out but it was lovely to see her character and also the Jewish representation she brought. So far all of the books have been very Christian, not in a preachy way and showing both good and bad parts of the religion and religion in general, but it was nice to see and learn more about Judaism in this one too. Overall a great story and I was glad to hear there's more in the works for this series! by @be_ca12
🧶The Knitting Circle by Jane Murray🧶 Thank you @weareprovoco and @hyggebooktours for another great tour! Although Jane has written lots of books before, this is my first of hers and I really enjoyed this small village cosy crime novel. I usually find that cosy crimes also feature amateur sleuths and books with detectives are more heavy and dark, but this one had both detectives and the great cosy vibes of a close-knit small village community (pun intended). I loved the village and the range of characters. It also felt a little soap opera-y with great little side stories for some of the other characters but of course you don't know which side stories will end up being relevant to the main murder case or how all the characters link. There was a lot of characters though and being in third person and following a different character every chapter for a while it did take seeing some of them a couple of times before I could remember names and who each person was when we saw them again haha. I loved our detectives and am very glad to hear we'll be seeing more of DI Jack Cunliffe and DS Gil Brennan in the future. Although, as much as I'd like to see Middlehurst's residents again, I hope for their sake the detectives aren't called back to this particular little village? I loved trying to guess and figure out who the killer (or killers) was along with them and didn't guess until nearer the reveal, and even then I struggled to figure out the why! 😂 Definitely looking forward to reading the future books in this series. by @be_ca12
🌞Greek Retreat Dreams trilogy by Stephanie Wood🌞 Big thank you to @hyggebooktours for another great tour of Stephanie's books! 💙 Having read and loved quite a few of Stephanie's books now I was really excited to read these. Especially being a little spin-off trilogy from her Greek Retreat trilogy of full-length novels set here on the island. This trilogy can be read on its own so don't worry if you haven't read the others, but it follows some characters we meet beforehand with them being employees of the retreat so it was nice to see some familiar faces and I'd always recommend reading those first. You can also if you wish to read any of this trilogy out of order too. You know I of course wouldn't, but if you feel more drawn to the storyline of book 2 or 3 you can totally just read that one if you so desire. I loved our main characters through all 3 of these books although there were a few moments I was worried could turn out badly (our MMC in book 1 Panayiotis is married). But the stories whilst having their sad moments, were lovely and heartwarming and so cosy. Still perfect holiday reads even though our MCs weren't on holidays in this trilogy, but the beautiful setting of Kynos still described so well and you really felt like you were with them in Greece. I love Stephanie's storytelling and books as I already mentioned and that now includes these ones too! by @be_ca12
💚Chasing Shadows in Borrowed Light by @safinah.danishelahi💚 This was such a beautifully written and heart-wrenching read. Definitely check trigger warnings beforehand but if that's not an issue for you I would definitely recommend this book! We follow the story of 4 friends living in the aftermath of one night's events. The friends are spread out over the world now having always wanted to branch out from Pakistan but a decade later they're all drawn back together and have to face what happened. I always love a book with multiple timelines so we can see snippets of the modern day with the repercussions and also learn about what happened from the time alongside it and this was used really well here. I loved our 4 friends Areen, Saira, Ashar and Usman and although some of them had the odd trait that wasn't the most lovable, they definitely had their reasons and it was completely understandable given the circumstances. It was very easy to feel sorry for our characters and is of course a very sad and heart-wrenching book. I don't really want to give anything away so I can't say much but I will definitely be checking out Safinah's other books after reading this one! by @be_ca12
