The Protect College Sports Act, an historic bill that would federalize many aspects of college sports, moved one step closer to passage this week by clearing the Senate in a 77-22 vote. The legislation next moves to the House.

The Act aims to establish a more stable and uniform framework for college athletics at a time of unprecedented change. It seeks to create national standards governing many of the issues that have increasingly been shaped by courts rather than by a single set of uniformly applicable rules.

Those issues include athletics eligibility, name, image and likeness rights, revenue sharing, and transfer rules among many others. Other issues addressed by the Senate version of the Act include scholarship protections, academic freedom, preservation of non-revenue sports, and international recruiting.

We reviewed the bill, compiled highlights, and analyze how key provisions might impact NCAA D-I and II beach volleyball athletes, prospects, and families.

Texas A&M University Texarkana was officially accepted into NCAA D-II effective July 10. The multi-year reclassification process is underway.

Wesleyan College transitioned from NCAA D-III to the NAIA effective July 1.

Loyola University New Orleans will transition its athletic program from the NAIA to NCAA D-II beginning with the 2027-28 academic year.

📢 NEWS: Florida Memorial University has cut the women's beach volleyball program after 7 seasons. The program began in 2020 and compiled a record of 9-81.

FMU competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as a member of the Sun Conference.

The FMU beach program joins 7 other NAIA women's beach volleyball programs either cut, or eliminated by university insolvency, since their inception.

⚠️Breaking News!

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit has granted the NCAA's request for a stay pending its appeal of a nationwide injunction that granted high school class of 2022 athletes an immediate fifth year of eligibility to complete in college sports - including beach volleyball.

The stay lifts a preliminary injunction from a lower Colorado federal court that earlier this month granted class of 2022 high schools athletes (collegiate athletes who exhausted their fourth season of eligibility this past spring) a fifth year of eligibility while a lawsuit over the issue was pending.

What this means:

Collegiate athletes who recently were granted a fifth year of eligibility are now INELIGIBILE - unless they have their own temporary restraining order or injunction. No beach volleyball athlete in the category has obtained their own injunction.
