Engineering my workwear wardrobe: piece 1 Hello if you’re new here! It’s been so lovely to see how many of you loved the fabrics I picked out at Merchant & Mills. In this series, I’ll be turning them into a workwear wardrobe, one piece at a time😎 First up is the patchwork top, made from three dobby cottons from @merchantandmills. You might also spot a sneak peek of piece 2 👀👀 This style is quite different for me, but I already know I’m going to get a lot of wear out of it! For the record, I have never bought this much fabric in one go before - this is not a normal haul for me😅But I had a few weeks to sew my work wardrobe, so all of these should be made up very soon! It took four trips into @merchantandmills over three days (scout, plan, then buy ofc) so I’d have exactly enough of everything and none of it would go to waste. It’s all beautiful natural fibres, and should mix in with pieces I already love too😋 The trouser set fabric is a bit less “work”, but I just couldn’t resist it. There’s no dress code where I work, so I’m picturing the pieces as separates in the week, and as a set at the weekend or on holiday with flip flops😎 Join me to see how they all turn out! Final round up 🙆‍♀️ GALA 🕺 Pattern challenge: majority hand sewing for this one, which I’m not very familiar with, so it took me a lot longer than normal and the fabric I chose was fray central. By the end, it was getting tight for time, and sadly I just couldn’t understand the written instructions in time and missed one of the metal hooks😅 🕺 Transformation: after that, I wanted to reclaim hand sewing for myself and prove to myself that I could do it. So I made my transformation with predominantly hand sewing and managed to enjoy it by the end. I’m proud of myself for this one, and so happy with how it turned out 💗 💃 Made to measure: having Skye there was honestly so special and making a GALA dress was a dream come true. Fabrics and fibres have always been a massive part of sewing for me, so I wanted my metamorphosis to happen in the material itself, which is how I initially thought of Rumpelstiltskin, straw into gold. The full design story is in my reel 🌟 🍲 Takeaway: I can do hard things! And that’s the sewing bee. Details behind my Metamorphosis Met Gala dress for the Sewing Bee Final 💛 When drafting this dress I had a strong vision and the fit mattered so much to me. Since I wanted the asymmetric seam lines every piece had to be cut singly and getting the contouring right was crucial. I am so so happy with it❤️ Having Skye walk down the runway was a moment the two of us had genuinely joked (and I had dreamt) about since we were 16, so it was such an incredible experience to actually live. I am so grateful to have made it onto the show. Making this dress with Skye by my side is a moment I will always remember🥹 Thank you for all the lovely messages about the show and this dress. Week 9 round up 🙆‍♀️ WARDROBE HEROES 🕺 Pattern challenge — I’ve always found reading difficult (diagnosed😅), so in the pattern challenges I’d highlight the key words and then lean pretty heavily on the diagrams to make it through in the time limit. This was a mad challenge but I was so happy with how it turned out. 🕺 Transformation challenge — shirts into a wedding guest dress. Week 8 round up 🙆‍♀️LITERARY ICONS 🕺 Pattern challenge — a deerstalker (who knew😏)! I’d never made a hat before and I loved the precision of it. It fit my head perfectly, so if you see me wearing it around and about you know why🎩 🕺 Transformation challenge — I used to love Matilda so it was really fun creating something for her slightly rebellious academic vibe 🤓 💃 Made to measure — a portrait dress, with the initial inspiration coming from Jane Austen’s own letters.
