Books with families that feel relatable, complex and (at times) tragic. Which books can you think of that explore this theme?

This book blew me away! I was attracted by the gorgeous @fitzcarraldoeditions cover as I’ve never read a book published by them that I haven’t absolutely adored.

I found this to be one of the saddest books that I’ve read thus far. A Bildungsroman, it follows the intersecting lives of two female characters, Solange and Rose living in 1980s France. It’s written exquisitely with this immersive prose that has you hooked from the opening pages. A sense of melancholy pervades from the start, but what truly interested me was the diversity of topics explored within the book.

Most obviously, it is a critique upon the unfair standards and expectations against which women are held, but beyond this, the novel also deals with race, sexuality, family dynamics and identity in a way that absolutely stunned me.

I particularly enjoyed the dichotomy of Solange and Rose and how despite having enormously contrasting attitudes towards life and relationships, neither finds true happiness.

I loved this book and rated it 4.75 stars. It’s the perfect read for anyone interested in reading about womanhood, friendship or looking for your next can’t put down read.
