More than a dozen people. More than 20 roasters. One table in Berlin Mitte.

That was Beany’s Bean Exchange: Fall Edition. Everyone brought beans they love, and nobody left without a new discovery.

On the table: @timwendelboe from Oslo, @scenerycoffeeroasters from London, @prologcoffee.cph and @nomaprojects from Copenhagen, @sloanecoffee from Bucharest, @grounded.coffee from Rotterdam, @teso.coffee from Warsaw, and many more. We tasted plenty of them at our brew bar.

@beanbrewtales brought a coffee you cannot buy anywhere: Felix’s own roast of El Eden from Peru, semi-anaerobic.

Benjamin and Lennart from @coffee.academics made us part of their Berlin trip.

Thank you to everyone who came and brought so many great coffees. And thank you, Beany Pros: some of you made the trip, and your membership helps keep these events free and open to everyone.

Berlin 🇩🇪 Push open the door at @frameworksberlin and you land in a frame shop for pictures, paintings, and graphics: handmade frames everywhere you look, corner samples, wood, and glass. Somewhere between them, @hoatrav is brewing hand filters, and that is a fantastic reason to visit. Hoa uses beans from roasters around the world, one at a time, and treats every cup like it is the only one he has to make. Ask what is in it, and he will tell you the origin, the roast, the reason he chose it. Flat whites and the rest of the espresso-based menu are there too, but the filter is the main event. His @antibarist pop-up runs until the end of September, so do not save this one for later. Visit right away.

Hôi An 🇻🇳 @cafe.slow sits out in the green, a wooden room in the middle of the gardens. Take one of the seats by the koi pond, watch the fish circling in front of you and the vegetable village spread out behind. Come early, those seats go first. The counter keeps different single origins for espresso and hand filter, changes the blends behind the milk drinks, and pours a robusta blend for the Vietnamese specialties. Espresso runs on a La Marzocco, hand filter when you want to stretch the morning out. The service is warm enough to make you stay for a few more cups.

Oldenburg 🇩🇪 @kaethekaffeeoldb is one of the first specialty roasters in Oldenburg and still one of a small handful. Almost every bean on the shelf is open to taste, so you can drink your way through the whole range before you commit to a bag. Take it as espresso off the La Marzocco, as batch brew when you are in a hurry, or as hand filter when you are not. The crew will happily talk you through the shelf. The mid-century Danish lamps in the back are for sale too, in case coffee is not the only thing you leave with. Go taste your way through it.

Our co-founder Frederik traveled to Colorado, USA, where he visited outstanding coffee places, met great roasters, and brought back stunning coffees. Join us on Saturday, August 22, at 11:00 for a unique cupping of coffees from the most interesting roasteries Frederik found in Colorado.

Bath 🇬🇧 “There must be something in the water.” Ever since Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood published his highly informative book on the importance of water (chemistry) for great coffee, we have been eagerly anticipating the day when we can finally set foot into his shop in Bath, to see whether @mcolonnadashwood practices what he preaches. He does. In fact, the water and the coffee prepared with it were so good that we came back every single day of our week-long stint in town. But it is not just the water. @colonnacoffee sources a number of unique and stunning coffees from the entire origin alphabet - all the way up to “Z” for Zambia (a first for us). Add to that the outstanding service from a highly dedicated and personable team, and you get a coffee place that is worth the trip to Somerset alone. We did not get to meet Maxwell this time, but we will be back for sure - not just to get our books signed by the author.

Berlin summer, Frankfurt coffee.

On Saturday, Fritz from @the_holy_cross_brewing_society drove his beans up from Frankfurt to our Berlin office and walked us through his current lineup. Clean Kenyan on one end, funky whisky barrel aged on the other, and a lot of good reasons to keep slurping in between.

Thanks Fritz for opening the bags and sharing the stories behind them. And thanks to everyone who showed up on a sunny Saturday to taste together. That’s the part we’re here for.

London 🇬🇧 The most important question we ask baristas at every coffee place we like is, “Where do you like to go for coffee when you are not working?” Without fail, that is how we find the most interesting and inspiring new places. No in-depth Google Maps search comes close. Same story this time. @calico_coffee_uk was mentioned so many times in our first 24 hours in London that it became priority No. 1 on our list. That was a smart decision. Sitting at Calico’s bar (we love bar seating), we were able to closely observe how much dedication and precision the baristas brought to every single beverage. The place was packed both times we visited, but the interior design still projected a calm serenity that perfectly matched the coffees.

London 🇬🇧 Stumbling upon a coffee place you know from another country feels a bit like running into an old acquaintance while traveling. “What on Earth are you doing here?” However, in the case of @omacoffeeroaster’s new shop in London, that question is a no-brainer. Bringing one of the best roasters in Hong Kong to London feels, on the contrary, long overdue. The shop is small, but packs a punch not just in the coffees they stock but also in the skills of their kind and chill baristas. Good to know that we don’t have to travel all the way to Hong Kong to stock up on some excellent OMA beans from now on.

Brussels 🇧🇪 The best door in Brussels is the one you almost don’t open.

@mok_coffee Studio sits right in the center, but it hides well. You’ll hesitate on the threshold, wondering if this place is really open to you. Walk in anyway. A beautiful coffee bar is waiting.

There is no wrong order here. The espresso drinks are dialed in perfectly, and the hand filters are the best coffee we’ve had in Brussels. Full stop.

And then the twist: MOK Studio doubles as a listening space. Take a sofa, let the records play, and drink your coffee in an atmosphere we haven’t found anywhere else.

Brussels has a lot of good coffee. This one you don’t skip.
