Meet Richard. 👋

Author. Artist. Illustrator. Playwright. Performer. Drag artist. Fundraiser. Activist. And, apparently, a whole lot more!

For years I’ve been creating things in all sorts of different ways — from writing novels and designing artwork, to performing on stage as Lady Red Velvet, creating Dragatha Christie, and raising money for causes close to my heart.

Some of these things might seem completely unrelated… but actually, they’re all part of the same thing: I love creating.

I’ve never really been very good at putting myself into just one box — and I’m increasingly realising that I don’t need to.

So, if you’re new here, welcome!

One of my favourite things to do is listen to music while I’m drawing. I love so many different genres, and what I’m listening to usually depends on what I’m creating.

This piece celebrates a selection of the artists I love listening to. I’ve combined it with a portrait of one of my Beard Boys, mixed with a photograph of my husband @davidamnesico taken at a music festival here in Barcelona.

Music is such a huge part of my creative process, and I love how a particular song or artist can completely change the mood of what I’m drawing.

Two heroes. One brain cell.

Good day to all you kind folk out there! It’s time for another Beard Boy Book Review — and this time I’ve been off on a very cosy, queer fantasy adventure!

BROMANTASY by Máire Roche

This is such an enjoyable romp of an adventure, combining fantasy, friendship, humour and a wonderfully cosy atmosphere.

The story follows Juniper and Mo, two best friends who find themselves embarking on an epic quest to hunt down a fearsome monster — despite being spectacularly unqualified for the job!

I really enjoyed the two lead characters and the relationship between them. There’s a lovely sweetness to their friendship, alongside that wonderful underlying question of whether there might be something more going on between these two supposedly platonic best friends. 👀

The world is beautifully described, and I particularly loved the contrast between the excitement of adventure and the cosy feelings of home. There’s something very comforting about this book, while still giving you plenty of fantasy adventure to enjoy.

I also really appreciated the story’s heart. What initially appears to be a straightforward monster-hunting quest develops into something much more unexpected, with themes of friendship, family and seeing beyond appearances.

A fun, sweet and cosy queer fantasy that definitely left me wanting to spend more time in this world. I appreciated a queer look at the fantasy novel and feel inspired to add some extra queerness to some of my own fantasy books.

And yes… I’d happily read more of these — although next time I’d like a little more spicy action! 🌶️

This summer, I had the joy of spending time with my friends @bohemiaboys at their beautiful home in Wales.

Surrounded by rolling hills, wild landscapes and the fresh mountain air, we enjoyed some wonderful walks through the countryside right on their doorstep.

I created this piece of artwork as a celebration of my life as a drag artist, @lady.red.velvet.

It’s a collage combining photographs of me from many of my different shows and drag characters, alongside hand-drawn self-portraits and portraits of queer icons and other inspirational figures who have influenced my drag. I created these illustrations in my own digital art style as @beard___boy.

I’m delighted that the piece is currently on display at @barlafederica as part of their latest exhibition. It will also be featured in another exhibition in November, alongside many fabulous works created by fellow drag artists from across Barcelona.

I love living in a city, especially one like Barcelona, with its incredible energy, culture, architecture and endless life. But having grown up in the countryside, I’ll always have a special love for escaping back into nature.

This summer, I had the most wonderful time visiting our friends, the @bohemiaboys, and staying at their beautiful @bohemiacottage in Wales. This photo was taken just behind the cottage, surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery I’ve seen in a long time.

Standing there, it’s easy to understand why landscapes like these have inspired so many stories of magic, adventure and fantasy. I can certainly see why Tolkien found inspiration in this part of the world for The Lord of the Rings.

I recently had a wonderful trip to the beautiful city of Bath, roaming its historic streets and enjoying its many scenic delights. I thought I’d add this fine-looking bearded gentleman to a photo I took at the iconic Royal Crescent, built in the 18th century and one of Britain’s finest examples of Georgian architecture.
