RS Pura Railway Station

RS Pura Railway Station, located in the RS Pura region of Jammu and Kashmir, holds significant historical value, particularly in the context of pre-independence India.
Establishment and Role:
* Built in 1867, the RS Pura railway station was part of a railway line that connected Jammu to cities like Sialkot, Wazirabad, and Narowal—areas that are now in Pakistan.
* This railway line played a crucial role in trade and travel, linking Jammu with major urban centers during the Dogra rule, especially under Maharaja Ranbir Singh in the late 19th century.
* RS Pura itself was developed as a planned township with features like broad roads, a large pond, elephant training centers, and religious structures.
Closure:
* The last train on this line ran on 18 September 1947, during the time of Partition, bringing refugees from Pakistan into India.
* After that, the rail link between Jammu and Sialkot was severed, and the RS Pura railway line was permanently closed. The rail infrastructure on the Indian side deteriorated, while Pakistan continued to develop its side of the former route.
Present State:
* The old station building has since fallen into ruins and is reportedly home to poisonous snakes.
* Locals have raised concerns over safety due to the deteriorated condition of the premises.
* Although the government once proposed to restore the site as a heritage location, these plans have yet to materialize.
Recent Developments:
* In January 2021, efforts were made by the Jammu and Kashmir administration to revisit the idea of restoring the station. The Lieutenant Governor’s advisor, Bashir Ahmad Khan, inspected related sites and directed officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for its revival.
