This a Beardsley print, my favourite perfume, and a combat tourniquet: a device you apply to stop the bleeding in case your limb gets torn off at the frontline or something similar happens.

I am back from Ukraine for a couple of months but I won’t be back to the Aubrey Beardsley Society.

I hope a day comes when we can all indulge in queer decadence, in fragile and fierce beauty of the line again. After Ukraine’s victory.

For now it’s time to help those who fight to preserve our peace.

It is only appropriate that the title page of the little book The Rape of the Lock by Alexander Pope, published by Leonard Smithers in 1896, describes the illustrations as “embroidered … by Aubrey Beardsley”. 🪡

🎼 Aubrey Beardsley’s illustration for his poem The Three Musicians (1896), and these lines in particular:

One’s a soprano, lightly frocked
In cool, white muslin that just shows
Her brown silk stockings gaily clocked,
Plump arms and elbows tipped with rose,
And frills of petticoats and things, and outlines
as the warm wind blows.

Beside her a slim, gracious boy
Hastens to mend her tresses’ fall,
And dies her favour to enjoy,
And dies for réclame and recall
At Paris and St. Petersburg, Vienna and St. James’s Hall.

💛 Beardsley’s cover designs for the decadent periodical The Yellow Book (1894).

🖤 According to the poet Richard Le Gallienne, “The Yellow Book was certainly novel, even striking, but except for the drawings and decorations by Beardsley, which, seen thus for the first time, not unnaturally affected most people as at once startling, repellent, and fascinating, it is hard to realize why it should have seemed so shocking. But the public is an instinctive creature, not half so stupid as is usually taken for granted. It evidently scented something queer and rather alarming about the strange new quarterly, and thus it almost immediately regarded it as symbolic of new movements which it only partially represented".

Aubrey Beardsley supplied several illustrations for the 1894 edition of Lucian’s True History. They are both grotesque and erotically charged.

❤️‍🔥

These drawings were commissioned after the heroic labour of illustrating Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur. The next commissions were Wilde’s Salome and The Yellow Book.
