The stars of the Long Border are Gaillardia and Leucanthemum right now! Both are easy to grow perennials ideal for beginner gardeners! But both are long lasting and reliable for any garden! Both are hardy to USDA Zone 4. Gaillardia are native to the Midwest and Southwest, too!

What happened?!? I can explain! Plants d*e because the conditions they need aren't the conditions they get. Most native plants need good drainage and here, the soil became too water logged. Essentially the plant drowned.

This photo of my garden has been trending on and off under the #droughttolerant since I posted it in 2022. The view includes two species of purple verbena, bright orange gaillardia, yellow helichrysum, silver santolina, opuntia, and native yellow eriophyllum.

Let's talk about one more Maple in my Maple facts for California. Acer palmatum, or Japanese Maple is one of the most coveted and unique trees in the whole world. There are thousands of named cultivars in a myriad of shapes, habits, and colors. Ideal for small gardens, patios, and partly shaded spots

More Maple facts for California gardens! Let's check out Silver Maple, Acer saccharinum versus Urban Sunset Maple, Acer truncatum x platanoides. Urban Sunset wins with it's compact shape, glossy foliage, disease and drought-resistantance. Ideal for smaller gardens and backyards.

Maple facts for fall foliage! Let's compare and contrast some different maples for your garden. Acer rubrum is the parent to the popular 'Autumn Blaze' maple and I don't recommend it for most suburban gardens. They get too big and need too much water. How about the Trident Maple instead? At 25ft tall, pest and drought-resistant, it fits much better in a small front or back garden.

Autumn morning vibes. Acer rubrum, Malus, and Acer buergerianum. Rushing water sounds, birds, early morning traffic, and a few dog barks in my inland Northern California garden.

Choose the right plant for the right place!

I just received a new shipment of plants from the incredible High Country Gardens. One of the plants I wanted to add more of is Marrubium rotundifolia, the Round Leaf Horehound. It's very unassuming at first but the felty evergreen foliage catches the light, dew, or frost, making it a low growing gem for all seasons. Later whirled flower spikes will add more interest, especially when combined with cacti or Agave.
