Hi friends! I’m teaching “Creative Self-Reflection Through Visual Journals,” an online workshop hosted by Maine Media, February 11 to March 18, 2027. Through demos, guided writing and mixed media exercises, and group discussion, I’ll share strategies for blending words and images into a visual journal practice focused on self-reflection. Each participant will complete a visual journal of their own, and leave with skills and prompts to continue this project. My own visual journal practice started in high school, and it’s still how I process life, experiment with new materials, and plot new creative directions. I love being in community with other creatives in the classroom as students share their journals and get to know one another. Here’s what a couple of past students said about their experiences: “Learning creative writing and visual skills together felt like an inspiring life lesson. My classmates became my best friends. Last summer, inspired by Rachel, I taught my own undergraduate course on visual journals.” @nana_takano nana_takano “That virtual workshop reignited my passion for creating and changed the course of my art making. Exciting news to share! I just finished a new one-of-a-kind artist’s book bound in the salvaged covers of a 1925 art encyclopedia. The pages are handmade kozo and cotton sheets stained with sprayed ink, collaged with vintage science and art imagery, cut through to reveal glimpses of what’s underneath. It plays with the impossible promise of any reference book, to catalogue everything and anything worth knowing, but no book can explain it all. But that’s the point: the questions we have about ourselves, our realities, our place in the universe, how we make meaning of our lives—these can only be answered through self-reflection and discovery. The Book Arts Guild of Central Florida invites you to join The Society for Speculation at the Winter Park Library on August 20th from 6-8 pm for a creative workshop! The Society for Speculation was founded in 2023 by writer Chrissy Kolaya and artist Rachel Simmons to explore serious and absurd ideas about fortune-telling, magic, forecasting, and other forms of prediction and divination. Their artist’s books, presentations, and workshops engage the public in a dialogue about future prediction and its role in contemporary society. Their current project, The Prediction Press & Divination Tool Kit, brings these ideas to life through this interactive community workshop. Combining relief printmaking with reflective writing, participants create their own tools of prediction and divination for self-reflection, while exploring together the universal urge to know what’s coming next in our lives. Participants will be led in a guided writing and art experience, leaving the workshop with a hand printed prediction map. Feedback will be solicited for a future publication on this project by @burrowpress All materials will be provided! Free and open to the public, but space is limited!
