𝙋𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙛𝙡𝙚𝙭 𝘿𝙚𝙢𝙤:
For the last five years or so, I’ve been shooting a lot on iPhone. After way too much trial and error, it’s turned into a really specific look and process that I genuinely love.

Almost none of this is shot on a bare phone, though. It’s usually built into some strange configuration with different lenses, adapters, and whatever else I’m experimenting with. I started with cheap 17mm screw-on lenses from eBay—super scrappy—and slowly built up a collection of accessories for different looks and form factors.

I’ve jokingly called this setup the “Palaflex.” Partly because I wanted people to judge the images before finding out they were shot on an iPhone. I liked the idea of it sounding like some obscure camera nobody could get their hands on—even though everyone already has one in their pocket.

About two years ago I started working with @beastgrip , and now we’re building full-size rigs that adapt PL lenses to an iPhone. People always ask why I don’t just use an FX3 or something since, at that point, the rig is basically the same size as a small cinema camera. Fair question. I think I just enjoy building the camera myself and shaping the image on my own terms.

The Beastgrip system makes shooting on iPhone feel open source. I can go clean and commercial or soft and dreamy, try strange cheap or vintage lenses, build out a full studio rig with wireless video, then pull the phone out and throw it onto a tiny motorcycle rig in seconds. Apple Log still surprises me—it has a look that feels different from everything else. It’s so visceral.

At the end of the day, it’s still a phone pretending to be a cinema camera. There are obvious limitations and plenty of quirks. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for a perfectly polished, German-engineered shooting experience.

Anyway, this is just a little demo of what I’ve built and learned along the way.
