Earlier this year, in February and March, I participated in the Polymorphic Futures Web Residency with @akademiesolitude During that time, I developed an online archive focusing on the Aravalli Ridge in Delhi called Mapping Dissonance.The project was motivated by a Supreme Court order (currently stayed) that removes protection for hills below 100 meters, threatening to erase a major part of the ridge. To document this loss, I started building an archive based on listening, initially focusing on recording bird songs and calls in the surviving green zones. But as I worked on it and shared the progress with friends, I realized that biological data wasn't the whole picture. When a landscape is destroyed, the oral history of the people who lived around it is lost along with it.To reflect this, I decided to include local folklore and neighborhood memories alongside the bird calls in the archive. I used decentralized ledgers to store these sounds and stories to turn them into permanent records, ensuring they could not be edited or erased by sudden shifts in administrative laws.While this initial phase focused on the Aravallis, Mapping Dissonance is actually a prototype for a much larger archive I intend to build in the future. In tandem with this, I'm developing a series of workshops (which I'll share soon) on acoustic ecology, listening, and archiving. My goal is to push for more listeners to come together to preserve the ecology of the planet by preserving its acoustics. I want to expand this into a global platform where anyone—artists, activists, storytellers, and neighbors—can upload the sounds and stories of their own changing landscapes to resist this kind of erasure anywhere in the world.You can read my interview about the project and the idea of listening as an act of conservation, which is now live, via the link below. Cloud Burst: With Elia & FriendsOn April 3rd, after wrapping up the Signal to Sound workshop that I am conducting (link in bio), we will be gigging at Mool from 7:00 PM onwards. We’ll sit around and play some sounds we’ve been making, jamming to, and listening to lately. We'll be joined by our friend Elia who's visiting from Berlin, big ups to @prohelvetia_newdelhi for bringing him here. What will we play? Is it experimental? Is it music? Well, come and find out. The lineup (not in any order) for the night:- delmore fx is an experimental electronic producer from berlin who processes sounds, noise, synth, and field recordings into something you really just have to hear in person to understand. Words don't quite do it, so just show up.- Ba is a Delhi-based transdisciplinary artist who works with polyphones and Mongolian throat singing layered with electronics. It’s like the 13th century met a motherboard, and honestly, it works.- bloop is another aberration in Delhi who will be manipulating melodies, voice and text into uncanny loops. Imagine talking to yourself but with others? bloop will be in the bloop company of delmore fx and @plan17music - aasma is a multidisciplinary artist using Pure Data and samples. She brings the flavor of hip-hop into her grooves, which is a nice break from the rest of us.- beatnyk is a noisemaker whose performance mostly consists of him staring intensely at his screen and offering a silent prayer to the tech gods that his laptop doesn't have a mid-life crisis and crash.It’s going to be a chill, fun evening with prolly a lot of "what's going on?" and "where's that sound coming from?". It looks like black canvas but it’s actually a sequencer.This is ORCA. You don’t need to be a "coder" to use it—you just need to understand how the patterns move on a grid. In this clip, I created a basic sequencing pattern by repeating a module and changing one value in each copy. The patch is routed it to my Ableton which is where the sound is playing from. This is one of my early jams with ORCA, learning and playing together.In the workshop, I'll be walking us through from this blank grid to a full improvisational setups patched into your own DAWs and VSTs.
