History In The Making

What an incredible moment to witness 🙌🏾. In January 2025, two streets in Hamburg will finally shed their colonial shadows and step into the light of justice and recognition.

The first street will be named after Cornelius Fredericks, a brave Namibian leader and chief who stood tall against German colonial oppression.

The second street will honor Louisa Kamana, daughter of Ovaherero chief Kamana, a victim of colonial sexual abuse who stands as a symbol of resilience and the strength of countless women in Namibia’s history.

This moment is even more powerful because the great-grandchild of Cornelius Fredericks stood with us today, celebrating this triumph of truth and remembrance 💯💪🏾💕.

🌍 This isn’t just about renaming streets; it’s about reclaiming stories, honoring ancestors, and forging a path towards justice and healing.

To those who fought for this change—past, present, and future—thank you. Let’s continue to make history together. 🙏🏾✨

In her 2021 text, Beatrace Angut Lorika Oola @beatraceoola , fashion curator and founder of the platform and network @fashionafricanow, examines the mechanisms of wokefishing in fashion design.

Beatrace describes how the term first appeared in a 2020 Vice article, to describe “the phenomenon of people pretending to hold more progressive views than they really believe or practice, in order to ensnare potential partners.” First noticed on dating apps, wokefishing is also evident throughout the commercial industry.

In her text “Wokefishing: The pretensive premise of progressive views, and the false activism in the fashion industry,” Beatrace asks: What beliefs and values is this industry built on?

“With regard to people who work in fashion, the danger is that they are capitalizing on movements and communities that they are not really supporting. The actual work should be activism,” Beatrace emphasizes and demands: ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
“White folks: Stop controlling the narrative! It is time to change it, share it and allow Black voices to add their experience to the conversation. How to start?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
* Connect with BIPOC individuals or platforms in your country who have the expertise and a network to bring new solutions to the table that can lead to tangible, lasting change.
* Hire BIPOC experts in leadership positions, and trust their skills.
* Let us create new concepts together!”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

BILLIE – BEYOND REPRESENTATION
What happens when friendship, chaos and self-determination collide – and two women suddenly find themselves in a situation that changes everything?
BILLIE tells a story of friendship, solidarity, freedom and the question of who we can be……
The costume design brings together contemporary design, vintage, Afropunk and new approaches to materials. Clothing becomes a language in its own right: it speaks of personality, attitude, memory and the possibilities for defining oneself.

And perhaps this is where costume design becomes most powerful: when clothing begins to speak before the character does — when what we wear becomes a language of belonging, self-expression, memory and possibility.

Solar eclipse watching — OLD SCHOOL. ❤️👌🏾

Yes, the CD did a good Job 😅❤️ I was already here in 1999, and somehow 27 years later I’m back again. ✌🏾🥹 Baden-Baden people… DO YOU REMEMBER?! 😂🙌🏾

What I loved most was the people. 💕

Strangers started chatting.
Neighbours connected.
People shared their 90s eclipse glasses like priceless family heirlooms. 😂💕
And before we knew it: “See you at Halloween in Altona!” 🤣🤩

Sometimes it’s simple: show up, say hello, be open — and look for the good.

The sun disappeared for a moment.
But somehow, everyone came a little closer. 💫 taken in Altona, Hamburg by @beatraceoola

Ein deutscher Kinofilm.
Ein komplett besetztes Kostüm Department mit Menschen afrikanischer Herkunft. 💫💋
Was trägt sie?

Before the industry discovered ‘African creativity’—Alkebulan women were already building it.”

Happy Alkebulan Women’s Day ✨ ✌🏾👌🏾💫

Today we celebrate Pan-African Women’s Day—a day established in 1962 by the Pan-African Women’s Organization (PAWO) and recognized by the African Union to honor the leadership, resilience, and transformative contributions of African women.

From fashion and textiles to art, film, design, entrepreneurship, and cultural innovation, African women have always shaped narratives, preserved knowledge, and imagined new futures—across the continent and throughout the global African diaspora.

Because celebrating African & Afrodiasporic women also means investing in their stories, their creativity, and their leadership—not only today, but every day. ✨

Today is a reminder to recognize their legacy, amplify their voices, and invest in the next generation of creatives, leaders, and changemakers. ❤️🙌🏾❤️ #panafricanwomen #africanfashion #alkebulan taken in Hamburg, Germany by @beatraceoola

What can Hip Hop teach the world?

More than music.
More than a movement.
Hip Hop is a philosophy.

A culture built on true values that the world needs more than ever:

1. Honor the source.
Respect where it comes from. Respect the pioneers
2. Pure joy is the vehicle.
Culture is born from creativity, expression and fun.
3. Only authentic appreciation matters.
Not extraction. Not imitation. But genuine love.
4. Community creates connection.
Hip Hop built bridges across borders, languages and generations.
5. Peace & prosperity.
A vision of creating, sharing, uniting and uplifting each other.

Hip Hop is one of the most powerful cultural platforms that has shaped urban communities worldwide. It gives people a voice, creates belonging and transforms lived experiences into global movements.

This festival was a reminder of the power of culture — vibing with legendary Hip Hop icons, feeling the energy, the history and the spirit. Thanx to all the artist ❤️❤️🙌🏾❤️❤️
