Between waves of intense sadness and shock, it has taken me some time to come to terms with the terrible news of Tania’s passing. The last time we saw each other was at our dear friend Zoe’s wedding. We raged all day and night and danced ourselves silly. Our cups were filled with love and joy, the essence of who she was. This is how I want to remember her. Tania was a brave, inspiring and immensely talented cinematographer who would go at length to help other women in the business; and did it with a smile, always. She was full of grace and kindness. The truth is, I would not be where I am if it was not for Tania. She took me under her wing, taught me everything from loading film to lenses, to focus pulling. I had so many questions, she answered them all, always with patience, never with judgment. She believed in me. She went on to shoot one of my first music videos, which were made on shoe string budgets and required the kind of commitment a lot of others would not have wanted to put up with. These films hugely helped my career and got people who once overlooked my work to take me a little more seriously. I am forever grateful to her. Her approach to shooting was precise, whimsical and bold. Her attention to detail and care, her warmth, patience and infinite generosity was her trademark. Despite her illness, she always radiated joy. Her stoicism and bravery in how she embraced her life, all of it, is a true inspiration. Amor fati my friend. You are terribly missed.
