Apollo, 2021
by Beau Thomas

Apollo and Effluent Waves, bound together by driftwood frames and swirling lines, point to the ocean and space, micro and macro universes, explore the footprints we leave in these seemingly limitless environments.

Apollo is currently on display at the Mills College Art Museum in Oakland, California until June 6th. You can reserve tickets at https://mcam.mills.edu or take a virtual tour at the Mills College Art Museum website.

Materials: Driftwood, Canvas, Recycled House Paint, Concrete, Insulation Foam, Abalone, Apollo 11 Space Module Foil

A special thank you to @minimuseumshop for contributing a piece of the Apollo 11 Space Module Foil to this project. It was a dream of mine to create a painting that contained materials that had actually been to the moon and with their partnership, it has become a reality.

Effluent Waves, 2021
by Beau Thomas

Fine droplets of salty water permeate through the crisp morning air as crashing waves churn pieces of matter from the depths. Eroding cliffs cascade down to the ocean, exposing thin slices of pebbly beach. I clamber through their jagged crevices and meander along the expanse of ochre sand, collecting marine detritus.

I create sculptures and paintings that layer biodegradable, organic matter intermixed with ultra synthetic and industrial materials. These swelling paintings and bulbous sculptural forms give a sense that the natural world is being interrupted, or even torn apart by toxic matter, and then crushed back together. Encrusted, dripped or spewed, their accumulation suggests the ecological disasters we find colliding with our fragile ecosystems, reminiscent of oil spills, industrial dredging and marine debris visible from space.

Effluent Waves is currently on display at the Mills College Art Museum in Oakland, California until June 6th. You can reserve tickets at https://mcam.mills.edu or take a virtual tour at https://www.artland.com/exhibitions/2021-mfa-thesis-exhibition

Taphephobia
by Beau Thomas, 2020
2’ 6” x 5’ 6”
Materials: Found wood, recycled paint, abalone, soil

Taphephobia: Fear of the grave/ fear of being buried alive.

“The fear of being buried alive peaked during the cholera epidemics of the 19th century, but accounts of unintentional live burial have been recorded even earlier. The fears of being buried alive were heightened by reports of doctors and accounts in literature and the newspapers. Edgar Allan Poe wrote "The Premature Burial", which was published in 1844. It contained accounts of supposedly genuine cases of premature burial as well as detailing the narrator's own (perceived) interment while still alive.

The recovery of supposedly dead victims of cholera, as depicted in The Premature Burial by Antoine Wiertz, fuelled the demand for safety coffins.
The general fear of premature burial led to the invention of many safety devices which could be incorporated into coffins. Most consisted of some type of device for communication to the outside world such as a cord attached to a bell that the interred person could ring should they revive after the burial. Other variations on the bell included flags and pyrotechnics. Some designs included ladders, escape hatches, and even feeding tubes, but many forgot a method for providing air.”

Luminescent Hydrozoa
by Beau Thomas, 2020

“The Immortal Jellyfish known scientifically as Turritopsis dohrnii is now officially known as the only immortal creature. The secret to eternal life, as it turns out, is not just living a really, really long time. It’s all about maturity, or rather, the lack of it. The immortal jellyfish (as it is better known popularly) propagate and then, faced with the normal career path of dying, they opt instead to revert to a sexually immature stage.

Their tentacles retract, their bodies shrink, and they sink to the ocean floor and start the cycle all over again.

The cellular mechanism behind it—a rare process known as transdifferentiation—is of particular interest to scientists for its potential applications in medicine. By undergoing transdifferentiation, an adult cell, one that is specialized for a particular tissue, can become an entirely different type of specialized cell. It’s an efficient way of cell recycling and an important area of study in stem cell research that could help scientists replace cells that have been damaged by disease.”

Painting #9 in the Hidden Art series by Beau Thomas

After crossing over the Bridge of Sighs and visiting St. Mark’s Basilica, I painted this surrealscape and carried it all around Venice with me. While walking down the cobblestone streets lined with white Istrian stone, a local pizzeria owner called me over to his open air restaurant and asked me about the little painting I was carrying with me. I told him that I was an artist and we began discussing the art here in Venezia. He had the absolute best sense of humor and had everyone laughing with his quick wit and friendly banter. He even offered us a free pizza and after a long day, it was such a delicious treat! This serendipitous meeting turned out to be a highlight of this trip and knowing that my painting now lives in this little restaurant is a unexpected dream come true. Every time I look at the comical expression on the shop owners face, I can’t help but smile and think of this wonderful day.

Fragmentary Care, 2020
by Beau Thomas

Nearly 3 in 10 Americans lost health insurance coverage in 2020, and more than half remain uninsured in 2021.

This project is based on my recent experiences with a broken healthcare system. Several unexpected trips to different Emergency Rooms gave me a glimpse into just how understaffed and underfunded our hospitals currently are operating at. Imagine if our government valued our healthcare workers and provided them with adequate supplies and funding. How different would this pandemic have been?
