After 3 months of hard work, my mural at La Roux Bistro on Commercial street in Springfield is finished!

This mural was a challenge but I enjoyed every moment of it. I'd like to think I put 150% into everything I do but this one was an eeeeextra %. I knew one day I'd get commissioned a mural where portraiture was front and center, so I'm glad I've been practicing. I want to thank the owners for giving me freedom, trust, and valuing art as an important component of an overall restaurant experience. Knowing that people decades from now will see my art and catch a vibe makes me smile. Chappell is a huge inspo for young creatives living in small-town America where rarely do artists make it big. It's cool to see this region celebrated and not forgotten.

The inspiration for this mural is Chappell Roan's 1910's dragonfly burlesque costume from SNL. Old world stained glass, Art Nouveau, Ozarks (Aux Arcs) nature, French Carnival with a contemporary twist. The other figure is inspired by Sasha Colby.

“Nahweh Yahweh” Acrylic on MDF, mirror, wood, clay, diffuser, LED. Insert father figure here: Symbols of traditional masculinity. On the surface comforting and familiar yet altered into ambivalence. How does one mourn the death of a parent when they still live? This is a grave, a monument to the father I had, but truly never had.
“I was supposed to cry to you about lovers, I cried to lovers about you”

This was a piece that I never planned on putting in the show. But I felt lead to make it. I cried several times making it and saw dozens of people cry viewing it in the gallery. It's not an aesthetic piece and certainly more literal than I typically care for but it moved people in ways I wasn't expecting.
A goal with my message was to express how our experiences with earthly fathers or men in authority reflects how we see the god of the old testament. The American Christian god, whether he exists, doesn't matter to me anymore. The harm done to me is more important to unpack right now. From my experiences religion has done more harm and the victims are silenced. Man uses it to control and manipulate. Every year we see more and more cases of evil men in ministry abusing their sheep.

I believe that all are responsible for feeding their own spiritual needs. We have been relying on the church for us to be fed and they have failed. The American Evangelical church cannot continue without being held accountable for their actions. I'm thankful abusers such as Hillsong, IBLP, Kanakuk are being exposed and it's just the beginning.

This year I’ve had the feminist urge to learn power tools. A patriarchal standard is relying on men to help women with traditional masculine creativity.

“Ozark Pisces Baby”

I began this piece during my New York residency last year without a clear plan for the end result. The @somo_arts_co member show gave me the opportunity to finally finish it (as an ex-homeschooled kid, I thrive under deadlines).

As I've been collecting Ozark ephemera, I was inspired to weave local, iconic motifs with contemporary colors and found objects. It’s easy to get caught up in art trends without including what’s right in front of you. I’ve lived here most of my life, and now it’s hard to imagine living anywhere else. by @beautyfromlight

Surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, inspiring architecture, and world-class art, I had the opportunity to connect with passionate and successful artists. (I know Thursday was actually the one year 🫶)

What a wild ride last year was! If you don’t know the story… when it was announced that Chappell Roan would perform in Kansas City. I immediately set out to celebrate it in my favorite art form, a mural.

What followed was a meandering road of telling lots of people, and coming up with a design, and shopping it around until I got the right yeses and some funds to offset costs. And the rest, truly is history. I recently posted an illustration of Tim Curry as Dr. Frankenfurter, with the quote “if you can dream, it be it.” This mural feels like the embodiment of that sentiment.

The thing about dreams though—you have work for them. Without years of laying the groundwork, both in my own creative practice and supporting other community projects, it wouldnt have happened. So my advice to other folks that have even bigger dreams—be in the world. Show up for others. Make the work that you can make now. Love on people. It’ll come back when the moment is right.

For the past week, @chappellroan’s face, surrounded by bright red curls, has been taking shape on the side of the Valentine Apartments in Midtown Kansas City.

It’s the work of muralists @jaredhorman and @beautyfromlight, who are creating this outsized work to celebrate the Missouri-born singer’s return this Friday and Saturday.

“It’s pretty wild how quickly her star has risen, and it's incredible to see a queer creative from Missouri continue to grow like that,” Horman says. “I’m a huge fan.”

Ever since Roan announced she would be holding a brief series of concerts that includes two dates in Kansas City, creative fans and local businesses have been finding ways to celebrate. Some 30,000 fans are expected at the sold-out shows at @nationalwwimuseum.

It's a bit of a homecoming for Roan, who was born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz in Willard, Missouri, and skyrocketed to fame last year following the success of her debut album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.”

Horman hopes the giant gesture is finished in time. He chose the large wall near @hamburgermaryskc on Broadway Boulevard, because Roan has said it’s where she saw her first drag show.

“I love Kansas City and I love Missouri, and, as a queer person myself, I really feel like the more we have someone like Chappell that's very visible continues to show young people this is a place where they can thrive,” Horman said.

A massive mural of Chappell Roan is going up in Midtown KC, right next to Hamburger Mary’s—the same spot where she saw her very first drag show. 🌈

It’s more than paint on a wall, it’s a celebration of KC’s LGBTQ+ culture and a full-circle moment for one of pop’s rising stars.
