Champions crowned. Wildcards named.

Jayuard Alciso will join John Mark Tokong— the Cloud 9 event champion— in the inaugural WSL Philippines Pro on October 31-November 10.

The women’s wildcard goes to 15-year-old Mara Lopez whose textbook surfing appeared mature for her age in 2-3 foot Cloud 9.

Carrying over repeat results from the Pacifico leg, Cathleya Casals and Patrick Alcala are the Junior Champions of this event.

Meanwhile, also a repeat winner, Dionesio “Dodo” Espejon brings home another Masters Champion trophy.

Day 5 began at daybreak to make space for 24 junior division heats, which ran until the Quarterfinals for both boys and girls.

Cloud 9 was smaller than previous days with a steady northeasterly wind ruffling the ocean’s surface. Still, ledges, ramps, and tube sections came aplenty.

Coming from a win at the Pacifico leg, Cathleya Casals remained in top form with the highest heat total (9.16 out of a possible 20).

Patrick Alcala, also the previous leg’s event winner, was on a league of his own as he dropped a 7.50 on a big alley-oop. But Leo Rietenbach, Mark Alon Cañon, and Micco Alipayo also have a few tricks up their sleeve.

In the Women’s Quarterfinals, Mara Lopez pushed her surfing against Cloud 9 vet Nildie Blancada while Susan Escanilla ran away with the win against Pinky Alipayo.

Heats 3 and 4 were classic match-ups: Nilbie Blancada scored one over Lyn Lyn Española, her fellow Philippine Team representative, while Dianne Nogalo conceded to Shelamae Arjona.

The Men’s Round of 16 drew the end of the line for Siargao favorites such as Philmar Alipayo, Noah Arkfeld, Benjomar Cañon, and Kai Alcala.

This leaves the runway wide open for new challengers. 20-year-old Mark Kent Hucay carved his name into Semifinal stone along with John Mark Tokong and the Alciso brothers.

The Masters division closed the afternoon with Bonifacio Figuron, Eloy Nogalo, and John Carby logging the highest scores.

Day 3 began with the Women’s Round of 24 and Angielene Alipayo and Vea Estrellado showed up sharp.

Meanwhile, the Men’s Rounds of 48 through 32 saw seeded surfers like John Mark Tokong, Noah Arkfeld and Kai Alcala best it out with household names like Jomar Saavedra and Jhon Markent Espadero.

An upset for some is a big win for others. The tension builds for Day 4.

A light breeze rippled through the early rounds of Day 2 but the building swell delivered bigger waves as forecasted. Despite facing elimination, Siargao locals showed why the island was more than its waves— Siargao was always about its people.

Brothers. Cousins. Fathers. Sons. Men raised by the ocean.

We asked the locals about their first time surfing Cloud 9 and they said: you get used to the wave but the fear never goes away.

Glassy bowls barreled through the reef as the first eight heats of the Round of 96 ended with a few broken boards and a handful of household names going to bed with bragging rights.
