Trying @oxtools suggestion, but, the jaws won't clear the raised flange of the vertical base, so, I think I'll just mill slots into the side of the adapter block.

Hey, #instamachinists, I got a question showcasing vast ignorance and inexperience. I need to machine a boss into this chunk of steel in order to mount this 4-jaw chuck. I'm under a pretty tight time crunch for reasons, so, any ideas are appreciated. There is only one set of holes with a large enough PCD (pitch circle diameter) to fit into the slots of the #rotarytable, but, those holes are where I need to machine the step to firm the locating boss. Those holes are drilled to 29/64" for tapping 1/2-20, but I can't fit 1/2 fasteners thrive the slots on the rotab. I didn't think of the next steps, really, because I now realize I could have just drilled them for a smaller threaded fastener and run a stud into a custom T-nut... But I can't do that now.

The ONLY thing I can think of would be to slap the thing into the vise and mill notches into the side and then use those notches to clamp the block in place. I'm just wondering if there's anything else I could possibly do that I just don't know of. I'm not concerned about looks. The block is just an adapter block for a few things onto my mill's spindle, so, it's not a pretty part, just functional. Thoughts?

One of the things I've been steadily tweaking is my 3D printer. The latest round of tweaks includes a Capricorn tight tolerance bowden tube, a BL touch bed leveling sensor and a Microswiss hot end with a .6mm nozzle. I also updated the firmware to Marlin 1.1.19 and have started to calibrate it. As you can see, the retraction settings are trash at the moment, but I'll get that tweaked in. I also need to lower the BL touch so it can properly be utilized, though it is wired in and functioning.
Not familiar with 3D printing and have no clue what I'm talking about? Well, I'm not that far off. Lol! I still have a lot to learn about the process, so I'm just learning as I go. I'm still terrible with CAD, but, I know what I want to design, so that helps tremendously to have an end point in mind.

What is up, good people of the 'Gram? I've been out of commission for a while. Lots has been going on personally and in That Dam Shop.
Personally: I got a new new day job. So far it's chillaxed and pays well. I have a lot to learn. I'm not welding or (usually) fabricating, but assembling. (I went into the interview for a welding position but they wanted me for assembly. Cool. Pays more to start!) I won't be posting much about what I'm doing there, but, I can share small stuff like making the stampings more visible on the HF Pittsburgh 1/2 socket set I bought to have at work. (I not a fan of companies that make you bring your own tools. You aren't going to get most people to bring the good stuff unless you're a machinist who takes pride in your tools as much as your work or in a place where more work done in a day leads to more money, like an auto shop. Eventually I will get better stuff, but for now, the HF stuff will do nicely for the imprecise nature of the work I'm doing.)
Tips for doing this:
1. Let the paint dry thoroughly before sanding.
2. Use very fine sandpaper.
3. Use very light pressure and I find that a circular motion helps.
Yup, you can see shiny spots where I removed the black oxide coating, but, again, these are not a set of forever quality tools so, I honestly don't care. I much prefer seeing the size instead of trying to pick out black sockets on a black drawer when the lighting isn't great.
How are you all doing?

It verks! A buddy of mine said that I finally got all the California out of the car. Lol! I'm so stoked to have this finally start to behave like a race car! It took me a while to figure out how to get the ProEFI Pro128 to control the two injectors the correct way (as a primary and secondary, both firing for each cylinder), but even with it being untuned, the improvement is so noticeable! Basically, I had to specify the injection timing for a theoretical 5th-8th cylinder then also select the secondary injector as the "output" for the 5th-8th injector. Bam! Now we just gotta find a dyno and get this thing tuned well enough to get around a race track in anger!

Miata floor drop #2 is ready for welding the top side. I managed to pull the gaps down to weld able levels all around. The stiffener underneath needs the same amount of work as the first, but it won't take nearly as long since I did one already. After this, it is full steam ahead on the cage!

Those who have known me long enough know that I have an special relationship with Sharpies. I have quite a few of them around, in all shapes and sizes, and one of my favorite you can see here, making it easy to transfer a love to trim this piece down a bit before welding it in. Little ones are useful, too! Hah!

Tonight's work starts with a piece of cardboard, as do so many of my other projects. The floor drop pan has a really weird configuration in the left rear corner, so, after tracing the actual floor and cutting out a template, I figured that if I carefully trim the pan, I could sneak that corner back under the OEM gusseted floor that I don't want to cut out, even if the welds/fitment on that thing are comically awful. (WTF, Mazda!)
After a bit more trimming with the recip saw, the pan now sits flat on the floor, though you can see a gap on the tunnel side. I'll likely bend that flap a bit more then use self-tappers to draw the pieces together and then weld it in place after cleaning everything down to bare metal. This is going more smoothly than the first, which is how it is supposed to happen, right?

I'm no @3d_magic_mike or @850fab but you gotta start somewhere, right? The #crealitycr10s5 I've got needs a lot of tweaking. Last night I got the nozzle seated more correctly and re-adjusted the bed. It needs a few more touches to get bang on, but, it is printing a bit smoother. From my latest round of research, you want to have no gaps between your heat break tube and your nozzle, so you don't get a cooked glob of burnt plastic in between the two, which greatly effects your extrusion and retraction, especially with a bowden tube setup. I anticipate many test prints in the future. I hate ringing, and, unfortunately, with a bed as large as this printer has, it is very hard to tune out at "decent" print speeds. I have ideas on how to lighten the moving bed quite a bit, but, those updates are pending cash, which isn't a priority right now, so, I'll just continue to learn and experiment with what I've got!

This evening I busted out my soldering iron to fix an Optrel Panoramaxx hood for @jmoschera. As you can see, the thin trace from the board to the ADF split and Josh tried to glob some solder on. That didn't work so well. I used solder wick to remove the excess solder, then carefully scraped the coating off the trace and then re-soldered the board to the trace. This isn't going to be a durable fix, but, it works again.
As a side note, I certainly don't like this hood. The construction of the electronics is... Hokey. There is very little in the way of protective coating on the board except for a very minimal conformal coating that's pretty standard on any electronics. A few gobs of silastic snot would likely prevent this issue, or having a real header and connector between the board and filter would be much better. The sensors are connected with unshielded, thin wires. There is enough space for crud to get behind the shield and that's never a good thing. None of this is anything I want to see in a hood, and therfore I can't consider this hood for professional use. The other big flaw is that you can't wear a respirator with it since it is designed to fit so close to your nose. #illpass

More vroom vroom! Anyone who tunes knows how crappy the calibration is right now from looking at that screen... But the scary thing is it is better than the previous setup by far. I found that the wideband isn't pinned correctly, so I don't know how rich its running, but I ran out of time as I had to leave so I could make it to a social obligation tomorrow. The exhaust needs some love, too. It's too loud from some tracks (if you didn't know, most tracks measure the sound levels emitted by the cars as they race, trying to keep idiot neighbors happy), and is way too raspy for my tastes. Our race season may be starting late, but, it is finally in motion! To all the racers out there, go kick some butt, drive clean and win!
