I wrote this for my family. Today is a tough one, but we’re tougher. With so much love.

Stay Awhile
A poem by Bebe Tafuri

We are gifted with each other
To stay awhile
and love
and learn
and yearn

We are gifted with each other
To stay awhile
and play
and pray
and seize the mother fuckin’ day

We are gifted with each other
To stay awhile
and laugh
and cry
and share a lullaby

We are gifted with each other
To stay awhile
and dance
and fish
and throw a foolish fit!

Family we are born to,
family we choose
Friends we hold onto,
loved ones we lose

Titles some scoff at,
others revere
We have names for each other,
to each we hold dear

Brothers and sisters,
at the core this is true
Are we not all connected?
When you hurt, I hurt too.

Hey! Stay awhile,
how long, we don’t know
Our souls, our spirit,
our eternal glow

We are gifted with each other,
thanks for choosing me
Stay awhile
and love, have fun,
and breathe!

It’s good to be us
We had each other then
Look around tomorrow
and see me in a friend

It happens all the time
My way, my laugh, my walk
You smile when you notice;
I hear you when you talk

Stay awhile
l love you, forever
Amen! by @bebe.tafuri

I wrote this poem April of 2017. Although it was never used for Coach Mel Smith's retirement celebration I always wish I had given it to him. If you know Mel or his family, please pass it on. Enjoy the memories! taken in Roswell, Georgia by @bebe.tafuri

Six Branches Drive
A poem by Bebe Tafuri

A rolling sweetness in the form of a street
a smile that greets us whenever
we meet

A slow and gentle winding climb
past mismatched mailboxes
along the drive

A quick nod hello to the street safety sign
It’s green and plastic in the shape of a child
a tall orange warning flag, a colorful clue
it’s safe to play catch here for me and for you

A sideways glance for a peek to see
the most lovely and kind little family of three
Once huddled out front with sparklers in hand for the end of the school year—
isn’t simple life grand?

Hang on, it doesn’t stop there
Signs of life in the slow lane
they casually share

Two chairs facing the sunset
 a bit further up
and across the way
A husband-and-wife ritual
to end the day
Sipping and sharing, how’d your day go?
Let’s just relax, you don’t want to know

Slowly cruising
more carefully still
comes a popular curve
just up the hill
On this bend you often will see
a mini crew of kids traveling like bees!
Lemonade and punch stands, a market of toys
I’m not making this up—
the jolliest of joys!

Nighttime, my favorite, a vision for you
Warm, welcome twinkle lights border the view
Are they linking together between each backyard?
These are happy people—
even when life’s hard.

Winter holidays
the cheer is free here
A medley of lights
multicolored and clear
Hung by our neighbors,
not commissioned out
a cozy display of spirit,
not a whisper of clout.

A rolling sweetness in the form of a street
a smile that greets us whenever
we meet. taken in Atlanta, Georgia. by @bebe.tafuri

Mary Ann - a poem by Bebe Tafuri

Generosity, ferocity
roar within her.
We say saint, she says sinner.
With an effortless flourish,
an elegant dinner.

Lipstick on, hair spun.
Be ready, it’s time.
Dance with her,
shop with her,
adventures sublime.

Brooklyn born,
eldest daughter,
forever father’s pet.
Fastest runner on the block,
beat all the boys, no sweat!
Hear him now, hear him then,
with a twinkle in his eye—
Did you know, did I tell you?
She’s the sun, the stars, the sky.

Logistics, specifics.
A problem? Just name it.
Even a whisper,
she’s there to arrange it.

Give her thread
and some bread,
creations galore.
Carefully, lovingly,
it’s her pleasure for sure.

From spool to cape
and flour to cake.
Dramatic, fantastic.
No fear, never fake.

Her treasures, her talent,
beauty and strength.
For family and friends,
always any length!

A dynamo woman,
always up for a twirl.
A woman to love,
always my dream girl. by @bebe.tafuri

The Girl of Extra — A poem by Bebe Tafuri

Extra dressing, extra cheese,
extra sauce,
extra, please.

Extra scoop strawberry,
extra sweet, you see.
Maybe a little tequila—
that’s her kind of tea.

If less is more in your world,
she’ll love you just the same,
but for our extra it girl,
it’s juicy jammy game.

She rolls extra.
We roll with laughter,
the friend we share it all with.
Extra ever after. by @bebe.tafuri

Native New Yorkers

Native New Yorkers
we never forget
thousands of souls
we pray, we regret

Over pizza, over deli
together we heal
over coffee, over beer
we know you are near

Enchanting surprises,
a prevailing grace
they knew you too,
your smile, your face

A warmth runs through
from head to toe
a new story created
to love and bestow

Together we grieve,
we play, we shout!
The biggest hearts,
there’s zero doubt

We are Native New Yorkers
a small town with clout
