The joy of finding your person a bit later in life 💕

The lushest solstice with my cariad. Dinner at the Shed in Porthgain (if you know it, you know), sunset and Barti Du on the cliff. Back to the van for a game of chess (I lost. Again!) and the horizon was still that dreamy indigo-orange at midnight. Simple things ♥️

I mean, it’s just ridiculous really, isn’t it? 😍
Just renewed my @nationaltrust @ntcymru membership (50 years and counting!) and this is why ➡️🙌

This is 50 🙌
It’s been the quietest of celebrations. I achieved my 100th parkrun and have been so loved by R, K and my gang ❤️. A month ago my mum was in a dreadful road accident; she’s home and healing but the ongoing implications mean the bigger celebrations are on hold for now. I’ve also been thinking a lot about a lovely school friend whose birthday should have been yesterday but she didn’t make it to 50. What an absolute privilege it is to be here. Treasure the small moments and let go the things that don’t matter. Life is such a gift x

I’m posting a photo each day in November to celebrate the small things 🙏

Calan Gaeaf / First day of winter.

I had the real pleasure on Friday evening of visiting @dinefwrnt after dark to celebrate Calan Gaeaf, which marks the first day of ‘y tywyll’ / ‘the dark’ on November 1. It was wonderful to access four floors of the house, including rooms not usually open, and learn more about the Welsh folklore when the veil between our world and the supernatural is at its thinnest 👻 And the skies were suitably dramatic!

It really helps my mental health to mark the old Welsh / pagan festivals throughout the year, which take place every six weeks and note changes in the seasons. From today it’s ‘only’ six weeks until the Solstice, after which the light draws out and February 1 marks Imbolc / the beginning of spring. If you struggle with winter, I highly recommend Katherine May’s beautiful book Wintering, a reminder that we’re designed to hunker down, go slow and practice lots of self care x

October was A LOT.

But, as always, there is light. Ever grateful for my people and places ♥️

Posting the real, rainy, raw bits as well as the shiny stuff. Yesterday I ran for the first time in 17 days. I managed 2.2 miles and was slow AF. Everything hurt - I thought I was ‘only’ having eye surgery, but the body keeps the score and I’ve hurt to my bones. It was drizzly and grey, and the sea was wild.

And it was gorgeous. To be moving, to feel the autumn chill on my skin and to face the spray of the waves are such small things, but, as always, the small things are the biggest. Every day I’m grateful for a body that moves and heals. I’m feeling every one of my 50 years right now, and I’ll take 2.2 slow miles for the win 🙏

So thankful to have this happy soul keeping my spirits up lately! I haven’t been the jolliest patient at times, but our micro adventures have been the best medicine 💕

Six days post-eye surgery and I don’t mind admitting it’s been a lot harder, physically and emotionally, than I expected. Since Saturday I’ve been able to build up some slow miles in nature and I’m eternally grateful to live in such a special place ♥️

A month on, I’m still reliving this magical place every day… and planning my next visit 🙏 High on the list is Nólsoy, the island across the bay from the Faroese capital, Tórshavn (Thor’s Harbour). We tried to experience as much as possible while having some proper rest days - and working with the very changeable weather, rather than overplanning in advance - but I can’t help feeling we missed something special by not booking the ferry to Nólsoy. I would love to hear from anyone’s who’s been there!
