Are you a founder, a marketer, or the one managing a creative project right now? Here’s something worth knowing before your next one starts.

Most projects don’t go wrong in the design stage. They go wrong two steps earlier, in the brief, when everyone in the room agrees on words like “modern” or “elevated” without ever agreeing on what those words actually mean to each of them.

By the time the first round lands, you’re not really giving design feedback. You’re discovering, expensively, that you and your designer had two completely different pictures in your head the whole time.

18 years in design and creative direction and that’s still the single thing that derails more projects than anything else.

So I’m building Brief & Deliver, the toolkit that runs you through a creative project the way I would with my own clients. The brief template that gets you closer on round one, not round four. A feedback process, a project management board, a couple of AI tools I built specifically for this (not the generic kind). Plus a set of videos on the things designers wish their clients knew, the stuff that usually only comes up once something’s already gone wrong. All without needing to become a designer yourself.

Rushed brief. Assumed goal nobody checked. Feedback that contradicts itself from different people. No one actually owning the final call.

I’ve watched this exact chain happen on real projects more times than I can count, and it’s never really about the design. It’s the process underneath it that was never set up properly.

Fix it with one thing. Get the goal, the audience and who has final sign-off written down and agreed by one person, before the brief goes anywhere near a designer.

Basic human needs:

1. Water
2. Oxygen
3. A design brief that says what you mean

I’ve read hundreds of these, and it’s still the part I look forward to most on any new project. A clear one tells you everything before a single design decision gets made, who it’s for, what it needs to do, what’s already been ruled out. Get that right and the whole project runs the way it should.

I can’t think of a single reason not to brief your designer properly. I can think of plenty of reasons to start.

- Your designer stops guessing what you want.
- Fewer rounds of amends, so the project doesn’t drag on for months.
- Everyone signs off from the same picture instead of five different ones.
- The price you’re quoted stays the price you pay.

Six colour palettes I’d hand a designer without hesitation. No colour wheel needed, just an eye for what’s already out there, a colourful leaf, a messy desk, a chic Parisian shoot, pink shutters, two retro interiors I can’t stop looking at.

Hex, RGB, CMYK, all on the card.

Founders, marketing managers, save this one for whenever a brief needs a mood, not just a colour.
