Becca Rosenthal shares her Israelism story

“I remember some of my Palestinian students telling me I was the first Jew they’d ever met that had been nice to me, and it absolutely blew my mind.

I was living with a Palestinian-Israeli family, and they wanted to go grocery shopping in Jenin, which is in the North West Bank. And I don’t remember why that day I was wearing a those and a hijab, but they bought some clothes and were like, ‘hey, put this on’ And I’m going, all right, I’ll put a hijab on. I don’t care. It was this beautiful magenta situation. And we had stopped at the checkpoint and we hand over passports and I just remember the soldiers yelling. And then I took a picture and one of the soldiers saw me take a picture through the car window and came in and started banging on the window and to roll it down and delete the picture and blah, blah, blah. And it was the moment that I as a white American Jew who had only been treated in the world as a white American Jew, it was the first time I felt what it is like to be treated as a Palestinian in Israel. And it shook me to my core and the people I was staying with did not skip beat. This was your average Tuesday. This is what Occupation is.”

It’s hard to sum up what pride bowl meant to me this year, but all I can say is that I love football, I love these humans, I love my pookie, I love my mama, and I’m so grateful that these icons let me continue to play with them

Also, winning is so fun. It’s so hard. It’s so emotionally and physically draining. But doing it with a team of badass bitches is the greatest feeling on earth. by @beccarosenthal_

Becca Rosenthal shares her story of having her job threatened while working within a traditional American Jewish organization:

While working at a small Jewish non-profit in her early 20s, Becca helped write curriculum for Jewish Sunday schools for various Southern Jewish communities. While being hired, the Jewish non-profit told Becca they were fully aware of her commitment to including Palestinian voices in her curriculum, and her participation in the Open Hillel Movement. They told her that they welcomed her voice.

After doing work with one congregation in North Carolina, major donors of Becca’s non-profit contacted her bosses, and threatened to cut major funding because of her work with a local Rabbi to ensure that community explicitly welcomed pro-Palestine Jewish voices.

3 major foundations, all of which support a variety of Jewish non-profits throughout the US, all contacted Becca’s bosses with threats to cut the organization’s funding because of Becca’s work. Ultimately, the organization at which Becca worked adopted Hillel’s same Standards of Partnership that bans JVP and other left wing Jewish groups that her college activism had advocated against.

She states:

“I’m a 23-year-old Jewish educator at a small nonprofit with fewer than 20 employees in Jackson, and donors have threatened millions of dollars of funding and called for my head.”

“I was going to go public with the story to be in what I assume would’ve been in Israelism potentially. And I ended up chickening out going public on it. And I want to tell this story in particular because I think it speaks to the level of fear and control that I had been cultivated with within the American Jewish community around speaking out when it comes to Israel.

Seeing Israelism was one of the most impactful things I’d seen in a long time because it validated experiences. It reminded me that I’m not the only one.”

We are grateful to Becca and so many other American Jews for telling their stories, and creating more space for Jews asking questions about Israel’s role in diasporic Jewish life, particularly those who work or have worked within the institutional American Jewish Community. by @beccarosenthal_

When I broke my ankle last October, I knew I wanted to come back to the football field, but I was not prepared for how hard the work was gonna be to get there. The work was worth it. Pride bowl was everything I wanted it to be and more. I love this community. I love these people. I love this team. I love this sport. I love not being injured. I can’t wait to do it all again. taken in Chicago, Illinois by @beccarosenthal_

This week, I celebrated six years at Reddit, and Reddit went public. I don’t have words for the emotions I feel, but it’s a mix of pride, gratitude, and love for a whole lot of nerdy passionate weirdos and the thing we built.

It is so profoundly uncool to say you love the company you work for, but when you’ve gotten to experience the things that those of us who have had the privilege of building Reddit have, there’s nothing else to say. I joined Reddit at 25, fresh out of a coding boot camp, and got to grow up here.

Reddit is my first big girl job. And it has been the most fun big girl job in the world with some of the best humans around.

We did it Reddit. We fucking did it.

Now onward. by @beccarosenthal_

Spending a month on a knee scooter is less than ideal, but if you have to do it, have as much fun with it as is humanly possible.

Cheers and thanks to Adele and everyone else who made needing to unironically say “hot wheels coming through” manageable.

To everyone who cooked meals, bought groceries, carried the scooter up and down my stairs, took me to shows, laughed with (and at) me, held me as I cried and provided moral support, I love and appreciate you more than you know. by @beccarosenthal_

Am I sad that my first football tournament ended with a broken ankle? Yes.

Am I insanely proud to have been a part of this extraordinary @l.a._icons team to the point where the broken ankle is just a footnote? Also yes.

Did I catch the fucking ball? You bet your ass I did. by @beccarosenthal_
