First published in 1620 by Bishop Thomas Percy in his folio of English ballads, “The Crayfish”, or “The Crabfish”/“The Lobster”/“Tommy Doddler”/“The Sea Crab” as it may be also known, is one of the most widespread English-language folksongs, with versions also appearing in Italy, France, and Turkey. Despite its extensive popularity, it rarely appears in folk journals and academic volumes. There seems to be no apparent reason why.

As a part of the Bechdel Project’s FIFE CoHo (Feminism is for Everybody Cooperative Cohort) Pilot Program, a new initiative designed to expand access to creative space while actively reimagining how artists are resourced and supported, Dancers for Palestine is hosting a fundraiser day!
Tickets are available at all price points, with 100% of proceeds going to Beirut Physical Lab, a contemporary dance organization holding weekly classes in Beirut, Lebanon. We hope to raise funds as they prepare for their second annual contemporary arts festival, Beirut Choreographic Encounters, bringing both international and local artists together for a week of workshops, performances and discussions.

The Israeli aggression on Beirut has been ongoing, as just a few days ago southern Beirut was bombed.
Please donate what you can to support those who choose to share their art despite the Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

If you can’t make any events but still want to donate, you can do so via bit.ly/j28d4p by @bechdelproject

June 27, 10am-1pm - Bechdel Project

Join us for a joyful celebration of creativity, community, and the families who make our artistic communities possible!

As an intersectional feminist arts organization, Bechdel Project believes that caregiving is creative work, children belong in cultural spaces, and thriving artistic communities are built when families are welcomed, not accommodated as an afterthought.

This Family Arts Festival is an invitation to kick off summer by gathering in that spirit.

Bring your little ones, your big kids, your grandparents, your chosen family, or simply your playful self for a morning filled with imagination, movement, storytelling, and connection. Together we'll celebrate the joy of making art across generations and the power of community rooted in care.

Throughout the morning, families can enjoy:

Arts & Crafts Station (10:00 AM–1:00 PM)
Drop in anytime for hands-on creative projects, snacks, and community connection with Bechdel Project staff, volunteers, and artist in residence Jennie Hughes.

Children's Improv with Ally Ibach (10:30 AM)
Build confidence, creativity, and laughter through imaginative games and collaborative storytelling.

Interactive Read-Along with Becca Bernard (11:30 AM)
An interactive read aloud of the brand new pre-published book “Getting My Mom Into Metal” by Becca Bernard, followed by a lively dance party and album cover craft.

Dance Workshop with Manatsu Tanaka (12:30 PM)
Move, play, and celebrate together in an all-ages dance experience that welcomes every body.

This event is suitable for children of all ages and the adults who love them. Come for a single activity or stay for the entire festival (drop-ins are welcome throughout the day).

Accessibility Note:
Bechdel Project is located up two flights of steep stairs. Unfortunately, there is no elevator access, and the space is not ADA accessible.

This event is part of Bechdel Project's Community Space Program, supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. taken in BECHDEL PROJECT by @bechdelproject

June 17 from 6:30-8:30pm - Online (RSVP on our website or through email)

Writers Workshop facilitated by Deepa Purohit: Talking About Your Work with Others

What are you working on right now? As an artist, how often do you get that question and find yourself at a loss of words? Where do you start?  How much do you say? How do you share in a limited amount of time in formal and informal settings?

Join @deepa.purohit playwright, educator and communications coach for this workshop to learn, write and practice how to talk about your work in a way that's compelling and leaves listeners wanting to know more, all in a limited amount of time!

During the workshop Deepa will guide you through structured exercises that will help you create "scripts" for particular audiences and circumstances and practice them in real-time with others.

Deepa is a playwright and a former public school teacher who currently teaches playwriting in the graduate programs at Brooklyn College and The New School. For 15 years has worked as a communications/public speaking coach through her own company, Finding Your Authentic Voice, Inc. by @bechdelproject

5/30 and 5/31 from 12-6 at Bechdel Project: come experience two unique durational performances presented as part of @greenpointopenstudios

HOW TO SHIT IN PUBLIC, (created by @frybagg ) is an audio/visual experience that takes place inside an outhouse. A glowing, UFO like mothership toilet in the middle of a dark forest. You enter, lock the door and put on headphones. The sound and lightscape will weave interviews, live recordings, written text, found text, opera and other source materials to take the audience on a journey to discover what their experience as a fetus may have been like. Along the way, they will learn about the dark history of birth in this country and the bright future we can collectively help to build.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE, (created by @sindybutz ) is piece that employs coffee as an icebreaker to explore matrescence, the profound physiological and psychological transformation experienced by mothers. Through this transformation, mothers shape future generations by transmitting values, fostering emotional intelligence, and establishing the foundation for a more empathetic society. This process is frequently accompanied by intense feelings of loneliness, which arise from significant shifts in identity, the absence of communal support structures, and a sense of disconnection from one's former self. Mothers serve as architects of the new generation. This performance extends an invitation to reestablish connections among individuals.
