Last chance to visit my dad Paul Brown's studio and see our installation of his work! I am in town and open for visits through Sunday June 21 - meet me in Williamsburg 😎One of my favorite paintings, from the last few years, followed by images of the space, our party earlier this month, a table of catalogues, reviews, postcards, etc.; and the man himself.Some powerful words from a 1979 piece by Bonny Saulnier in New Boston Review (they ring true for me now almost 50 years later!):"All of Brown's art is about something larger than life, something that depiction can only skirt but that these deep, willed, abstract images penetrate. Cutting through the exteriors of things, they go right for the heart. They discover feeling. The color, the touch, dab and smear of the surface, the fleet and dragged strokes, the alternately grave and hedonistic images make contact with the passion seeded in humanity." by @beckybrwn

Three of my dad’s paintings on view at his South Williamsburg studio, with a “goodbye loft” party on June 1! My parents built out this space in the early 80s; we lived there till ’91, and my dad, painter Paul Brown, continued to work there till last year. As a goodbye, we have installed a selection of his paintings from the 1970s to the present on two floors. My dad Paul Brown moved into his Williamsburg studio the year I was born (1983), and he is now preparing to leave. We are creating an inventory of his work, which has been deeply challenging and rewarding. Sorry but we are not sorry… we had a great time celebrating the launch of Vol 4 @beverlysnyc yesterday !Becky Brown @beckybrwn closed yesterday’s programming with a reading from her text painting titled “Sorry Not Sorry” (2019). It was a privilege to share the space with so many of the artists and editors who generously contributed to the publication by giving their own unapologetic views of another artists work through writing. We think it’s a banger! We are excited to have you all as members of this growing family of collaborators. “The Painted Wordplay and Critiques of Becky Brown” - Exhibition Review of “Becky Brown: Pleasure Reading” at Freight + Volume Gallery, Tribeca (on view through March 7, 2026)I recently wrote my first review for a different publication: IMPULSE Magazine! I’ve posted the link to the full article in a story and below is an excerpt.Additionally, there will be a closing reception at the gallery this Saturday from 5-8pm! Please come and check out Brown’s show along with the equally great “Ezra Johnson’s Home and Garden Show”!Postmodernism has been on my mind, and one of the questions I have been debating with myself over is whether it still holds sway in contemporary art of the 2020s. A recent visit to Freight + Volume Gallery gave me an answer in the affirmative through a remarkably conceptual series of paintings by the Manhattan-born, currently Buffalo-based artist Becky Brown. Some conceptualists make use of the visual semiotics of our screen culture as critical commentaries of life in the digital age, but then an artist like Brown comes along and goes even further by appropriating and dismantling the strictures of language through the power of paint. Brown’s Pleasure Reading is a humorously cogent and cleverly observant reflection of text’s almost unbearably encroaching presence in our lives. Like a classic postmodernist, her paintings consider these ideas through a collapsing of visual conventions undergirded by appropriation and wit.Brown’s work is heavily influenced by the art critic Jonathan Crary’s “Internet Complex” theory from his 2022 book, Scorched Earth, in which he argues that the filtration of the Internet into practically every facet of our day-to-day existence carries deleterious repercussions, from fomenting chronic screen addiction to increasing surveillance in the private sphere.#artcritic #artcritics #artreview #artwriter #artwriting by @beckybrwn
