How much of a woman’s life should be organised around making sure she survives it?

I saw this placard and I haven’t been able to shake it.

Because it names the thing we don’t say out loud.

We don’t just live as women. We negotiate our survival.

We negotiate what time we can leave the house. Which street is too quiet. Which taxi rank is safer. Which parking is too dark. We negotiate how friendly is too friendly. How firm is too rude. How loud is too provocative. We negotiate the skirt, the drink, the laugh, the walk home.

When I go for a walk alone, I choose the busy road. I count who is behind me. I hear the car slow down. I feel the comment before it is even spoken. I walk faster, keys tighter, phone ready.

When I walk that exact same road with my husband, no one says a word. No car slows down. No one bothers me.

Same woman. Same road. Same body. Same day.

The only difference is the presence of a man.

So was I ever the problem?

We call it being careful. We say, “Share your location, sisi.” “Don’t walk alone.” “Send me a pin when you arrive.” We have turned survival into sisterly love, because what else can we do?

But really, it is women quietly shrinking our lives to make it more possible that we get to keep them.

We leave early. We cancel. We avoid. We stay home. We say no to opportunities because the logistics of being a woman in the world are too dangerous. We dim ourselves to stay alive.

And we are exhausted.

How much of our lives should be spent this way? How much? At what point do we stop asking women to be more careful and start demanding that the world be safer for women?

We don’t want to be survivors. We want to be alive. Fully, freely, loudly alive. We need change today! We have daughters we are fearful for on top of everything else we worry about.

Becky Motumo-Molete’s journey has taken her into rooms she could never have imagined, meeting extraordinary people, having extraordinary experiences, and building a career that has unfolded in ways she could never have planned.

Maybe that’s the beauty of staying curious, saying yes, and remaining open to possibility: You never quite know which room you’ll find yourself in next.

This has been on of our favourite conversations to date - we kept recording long after we wrapped, because we just kept finding new things to talk about!

And we had one very special little guest along for the ride. Becky’s daughter Nelani popped in and out of our recording, a very cute and very real reminder of what life looks like for working moms. Sometimes the kids come into the room with you. ❤️
