I’m flying home from PA feeling grateful and inspired after attending the Picture Books Writers and Illustrators retreat at @thebarnatboydsmills with my critique partners of ten years. We met at a similar retreat led by the same fantastic teachers @helakoskibooks and @darcypattison in 2016, and we’ve been writing together ever since. It was lovely to be together, to write, to brainstorm, to learn, and to meet so many other kind and creative people. Many thanks to Darcy, Leslie, @nancycastaldoauthor, and @matt.phipps for your guidance on my manuscripts! Κι αν αντί να προετοιμάσουμε τα παιδιά για το σχολείο, παίξουμε;
Τα παιχνίδια ρόλων -σε οποιαδήποτε ηλικία- δίνουν την ευκαιρία να μπουν στη θέση των άλλων, μα πιο πολύ να εκφράσουν το τι πιστεύουν μια αισθάνονται τα ίδια.

Έτσι, με το βιβλίο "Πώς να πάτε το χταπόδι σας στο σχολείο" της @beckyscharn σε εικονογράφηση @jsinquett που κυκλοφορεί από @papadopoulos_publishing μας δίνεται η ευκαιρία να προετοιμάσουμε τα παιδιά που δεν έχουν ξαναπάει παιδικό ή νηπιαγωγείο με #χιουμορ και #φαντασια, ενώ βοηθά τα παιδιά που θα ξαναπάνε σχολείο (είτε είσαι νήπιο είτε θα πας δημοτικό αξίζει να το διαβάσεις) να εκφράσουν τις σκέψεις και τα συναισθήματα τους.

Αυτό που ξεχωρίζει το βιβλίο είναι πως δεν μοιάζει με τα διδακτικά παραμύθια που διαβάζαμε τα προηγούμενα χρόνια. Έτσι κ αλλιώς, η κάθε τάξη είναι διαφορετική. Δεν είναι η τάξη και οι δραστηριότητες που αγχωνουν τα παιδιά αλλά η αποδοχή, η εμπιστοσύνη, η επικοινωνία.
Κι εκεί εστιάζουν και οι δημιουργοί.

Σε ένα χταπόδι που αποδέχονται το άγχος του, μια φιγούρα που δοκιμάζει και δεν απαιτεί και έναν εκπαιδευτικό που απλώνει τα χέρια.
Πόσο ταιριαστά τους παρουσίασε.. Τα νήπια είναι όντως πλάσματα με πολλά χέρια, φόβους και φαντασία. Ο γονιός που μπαίνει στη θέση των παιδιών, δοκιμάζει, σκέφτεται και αντιδρά σαν παιδί και ο εκπαιδευτικός μοιάζει με τα νήπια αλλά φαίνεται πιο μεγάλος.
Εκπληκτικό από όλες τις απόψεις.

Δίκαια γίνεται το προτεινόμενο βιβλίο για φέτος προς όλους τους γονείς. Και... αφήστε τα παιδιά να σας το "διαβάσουν" με όποιον τρόπο θέλουν. Έτσι κ αλλιώς, κρύβονται πολλά χταποδακια μέσα στις τάξεις και ...μέσα στις τσάντες.

When I learned that the book @jsinquett and I made together was selected for Dolly Parton’s @imaginationlibrary, I told my husband that I didn’t think any other career achievement could top this one. I was so honored to have our book be a part of this incredible program that has put millions of books in the hands of children. I grew up listening to Dolly with my parents and delighting in her performances in Steel Magnolias and 9-5. She was a brilliant singer, songwriter, business woman, and performer. And I adored her quick wit! But what I admired the most was her generosity, the kindness she showed others, and the light she brought into this world. I’m grateful for her example. ❤️ by @beckyscharn

For anyone who has recently watched Remarkably Bright Creatures on Netflix and is now obsessed with octopuses, I see you. If you’d like to share your current obsession with the littles in your life, be sure to check out HOW TO GET YOUR OCTOPUS TO SCHOOL! It’s beautifully illustrated by @jsinquett and it has loads of fun facts about octopuses. It also might help with back-to-school jitters (but it’s too early in the summer to think about that).

This is a @jenfierjasinski appreciation post. I met Jen ten years ago at a writing retreat at @boydsmills and I’ve been lucky enough to be in a critique group with her ever since. I’m a better writer because of Jen.

In the past year, Jen has had three books come out and each one is exceptionally well-written, as well as expertly illustrated by her talented co-creators @anitab_art, @lisachowart, and @leamarieravotti. Just look at those beautiful covers!

Jen is smart, kind, compassionate, and thoughtful, and all of those characteristics show up in the books she writes. There’s also a large dose of silliness in BECAUSE OF YOU I’M A SISTER. I’d highly recommend reading all three (as well as her first book MY PIANO) if you’d like to elevate your craft or share a story with a child in your life. 💛

BECAUSE OF YOU I’M A SISTER is perfect for new siblings.

If you’re looking for the perfect summer read aloud, I’ve got you covered. DON’T SPLASH GRANDPA has everything you need for an unforgettable story time… plenty of onomatopoeia, loads of silly antics, and one sleeping grandpa. The lively, rhyming text and vibrant illustrations exude joy! @juliegz123 and @srinidhidraws knocked it out of the park and straight into the pool. This book is perfect for story time, pool time, or anytime!

Lots of splashing took place during the making of this post, but I’m happy to report that grandpa did not get wet. I cannot say the same for me.

One of the fun things about being an author is that every now and then a friend will send a photo of one of your books in an unexpected place. Whenever this happens, I’m utterly delighted! But I rarely tell anyone other than my family. Together we share of moment of celebration and then I move on. However, I’m trying to get a little more loose with my joy. So, look! BEST BUDS was spotted at the Science Museum of Virginia! Writing for kids is a pretty great gig.

I’ve been busy working on a few different projects the past couple months, so I haven’t posted much. Mostly because no one needs to see a photo of me pondering the same sentence for a week straight. And also because I haven’t had much to say lately. But here are a few things that have been bringing me joy.

1) A Peter Rabbit mug with a fancy gold rim.
2) Gemstone marbles. Need I say more? Probably not. But for context, I had a large collection of rocks and marbles as a kid. I lost my marbles (literally) but still have plenty of rocks in my house. When 52 year old me spotted these at a rock store that was closing, 10 year old me got pretty excited. We’ve both been giddy all week. They look like mini planets!
3) Night Sky
4) New favorite snack
5) Book mail
6) George. Always, George.
7) The outfit I was wearing when the nurse at the doctor’s office said “Well, you look… comfortable today.” I was.
8) A pretty plant. Every time I take a photo of a plant I think I should look up what it’s called when I get home. I never do. And that’s probably okay.
9) A rainbow ribbon thing at my favorite coffee shop
10) These two. Always, these two. You know the laughter was loud when the photo is blurry.
