The origin story of Third Friday Hayti.

In 2016, Be Connected Durham hosted a conversation with City of Durham transportation and planning professionals at Beyu Caffe. That conversation led to an intervention: the design of the original Equitable Engagement Blueprint, adopted by Mayor Steve Schewel in 2018.

Shortly after, Be Connected Durham formed the FSC Fellows Project as a container to revitalize the historic Hayti neighborhood. The Project was activated in 2020 through community-member-led research, built on canvassing and capacity-building.

The result was the inaugural Third Friday Hayti: a Five Site public art activation that engaged residents, artists, vendors, culture bearers, and everyday citizens. Here, people organized around civic duty for the sake of restoring and boosting economic mobility, and art and culture were the medium.

Each event featured food trucks, vendors or a map of neighboring businesses to support, and outdoor live music by local musicians, in the courtyard or on the front plaza at Site One, Hayti Heritage Center in Durham, NC.

Unhoused, formerly Houseless disabled youth, families, and elders from California have created a movie about their lives and their ancestors lost to the ongoing violence of homelessness, evictions, gentrification, poLice terror, and encampment sweeps.

The cast and crew of the film Crushing Wheelchairs will be coming to Durham October 22 to @westendfoundation to screen the film and participate in a panel discussion about homelessness, disability, the impact of encampment sweeps, etc.

Please consider donating to support the cast and crew with travel expenses (via the Give Butter link 🔗 in bio) as they make their way through the south on their “UnTour.” Tickets are tiered priced to allow folks to pay what they are able and contribute any excess they can so that our unhoused neighbors here in the Bull City can attend. Even if you cannot attend, please consider making a donation.

It's been an honor to host this show and all of the amazing artists and people that helped make it happen. Thank you, everyone.
