What if we taught organoids to sing a lullaby? Last week, we caught a first glimpse of what that might be like at the tryout of The Butterfly_Parable. This is a work in progress in which a lullaby is realized through call and response with a biocomputer made of human brain cells. Like every oral tradition, it is a game of whispers in which the song changes slightly with each retelling. The night at Doka in Amsterdam was intimate and as expected the conversations after our first run were… brainy. 🦋 It left us with much to dream about and sleep over. A three month exhibition in 2027 awaits. Butterfly_Parable - an experiment by @stefveldhuis , @arran.lyon , @no.compliments and @becplexus 🦋 by @becplexus
Lullabies are a near-universal phenomenon. Most cultures have a collection of songs for soothing infants, quietly sung by tired parents in the middle of the night. Lullabies are transferred through oral tradition from caretaker to child, changing slightly with every passing generation, and with every performance. A child babbles the phonemes together, mimicking the caretaker – possibly imagining the jumbles of sound hold similar meaning to the jumbles of sound we have marked as “words”. In Butterfly_Parable, a lullaby is transferred to a biocomputer based on human neurons: organoids made by the Swiss company FinalSpark, in which neural cells can receive and process information. Through call and response mimicking oral tradition, the phrases of the lullaby are constantly rewritten, and sung back through the voice of Bec Plexus. A babble, a murmur, a whisper, a shout – constantly recoding the lyrics of care. +++ Butterfly_Parable is created by Stef Veldhuis – Artist Arran Lyon - Creative technologist Bec Plexus – Voice and Composition Allison Wright – Composition and Sound Design Curated by Marijn Bril Filmed by Nia Alexiava +++ Butterfly_Parable is generously funded by Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie and Iona Stichting. by @becplexus

Sharing a little snippet of the first studio recording from LIJF! Music & mix by Bec Plexus ⚡️ → Next week I’ll be performing LIJF! at September Me in Amersfoort. This show is close to my heart. Hope to see you there 🤍 by @becplexus
Roomful of Teeth x Bec Plexus !!! “When I heard this group for the first time, something shifted inside me. The new work will be programmed together with Caroline Shaw’s Partita. This being a milestone for me would be a gross understatement 🥹 There are several performances already planned in November. The exact dates will follow soon, but you’ll certainly hear it performed at November Music - who were so kind to commission this collaboration. This piece feels like the kickoff of a new chapter of solo creations for me. So grateful for Philine van den Hul to pair it with this unbelievable portrait 🥵.” by @becplexus
Fata Morgana ⋆.࿔*:･ . . lil behind the scenes with Bec. . ೃ we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into when we took the train down to Coutarnoux after 10 transits, we ended up on the final bus to the festival location, and it started to dawn on us~ this was going to be b-e-a-utiful Joseph, one of the masterminds behind the festival, led us to the cave - yes, THE CAVE. our Matrix cave rave dreams were about to come true. Helen Island was alluring, playing with our expectations - never knew what he was going to do next and then Simo Cell pulled us straight onto the dance floor ᥫ᭡.ִֶָ𓂃 two of my favourite worlds collided ~ music and knitting Jochem is friendshaped Gerdien is also friendshaped. they both came alllll the way from the Netherlands !i!i at festivals, there often isn’t a private corner where i can do a vocal warmup . having to sing scales in a public place always used to make me feel so self conscious and awkward. but at this very spot, in between the showers and the bar, for the first time, i did it and it felt fine. relaxed. relief! after dancing till 5am, i wasn’t sure if i’d be down to clown another day, but these guys totally drew me back in ꉂ`𖦹 Jochem impressed the French with his sick tricks RHR closed the festival. really clever layering of all kinds of percussion and the thickest bass i have ever heard. also, upon closer look in the train the day after, such a sick haircut. nice to meet you, RHR. possibly the most fun and exhilarating ride back to our accommodation. this festival crew member legend - Clem .𖥔 ݁ ˖ - raced us back in this tiny car that had a massive bug in it. blasting french hits, tearing through the curves. the bug survived. amen this meme popped up today and just perfectly summed it all up. something that’s so cool with french crowds - we usually get some new followers and DMs during or right after the show, but in France it always happens the day or days after. these people are really present on the night itself and then take the time to reflect and share afterwards. so wholesome. as instructed and finally, can’t skip a close up of the local flora ೃ࿔ this was so healing and recharging, thank u by @becplexus
With @marinaherlop’s new single this week, I got curious to figure out what’s actually happening with the vocal motives in her track Miu. Transcribing it with midi felt like the most natural start. I love how it highlighted how this track feels both organic and so on grid. I think it’s partly to do with the rhythms being so tight on grid, while the vocal intonation floats a little more. The result is so eary. #femaleproducer #carnaticmusic #musictheory by @becplexus
I can’t help but approach my outfit as a collection of individual things. Somehow seeing the outfit as a whole is lost on me. The closest I get, is colour matching. Pairing my silver @topologie.official bag (the first time @noplexus was gifted something by a brand 🩵) with silver sneakers.. To me, it usually comes down to the stories behind each piece. I pick a memory I want to be inspired by that day, and wear the piece that goes with it. Today that meant wearing the shirt I got at Lucha Libre in Mexico City. It reminds me of the adventure and silliness we had that night - watching bombastically whimsical wrestling matches. Drinking beer in a glass with lime, salt and red pepper on the rim. by @becplexus
Hard to believe this gem is only three years old. The first single of @noplexus 🦋 Our cravings for tragedy and body scans were loud. The imagination of AuthessX and @meesjoachim were even louder. For those who want to experience this video once more in its fullest glory, there will be a screening in Focus in Arnhem. @armenoalberts has been so generous to curate a program packed with short films to celebrate the annual Day of the Composer by @newmusicnow.nl Saturday June 20 _ 17:00 _ @focusarnhem #blender #deconstructedclub #femaleproducer by @becplexus
baby’s first expo with five tapestries at the Fashion and Textiles market at @volkshotel 💅🩵 what a milestone! it honestly had been some years already that i’d been dreaming of sharing this stuff, but where to start? it truly felt like i was starting all over again. so yeah, really grateful for @gerdienvanhalteren to include me and for @no.compliments for the push in the back. thank you, sweeties! #textileart #punchneedle #tapestry by @becplexus
Come find me at Volkshotel this Sunday! I’ll be exhibiting a couple of tapestries I’ve made, including this one called •Mensje• 🍃 It will be part of a textile market with a lineup packed with cool local designers. This particular one is my pride and joy. I made it entirely by hand, using a punch needle. Much looking forward to seeing it through other people’s eyes. I’m also starting to be curious about making tapestries for others, so do pop by if you’re dreaming of something soft on your own wall.
