Check out this toad I caught last weekend. This is my biggest bass this year! I don’t have a scale because I lost my boga grip climbing rocks in San Pedro, but this fish was pretty heavy. It was 1:30 and I wanted to catch one more fish before I left, so I grinded out a largemouth that was about a pound. While I was pulling that fish in I saw a 5-6 lb smallie swirling under it like a shark- at that point I refused to leave. About 3 minutes later I unexpectedly caught this lunker. My line was super frayed because I was too lazy to retie after fishing and hiking 8hrs, so it was a nerve racking fight. The fish kept diving into weeds, which actually helped because it subdues them like throwing a towel over a cat. To think I almost didn’t go because I wanted to sleep!

C2C with the lucky craft classical leader. This bait fishes like a manns baby 1 minus, it’s hard to get it diving below a foot so it’s perfect for burning over grass. Notice how that fish struck right when I changed the cadence with a little sweep. Since you can’t really deflect subsurface cranks [unless you are in super shallow water and submerge your rod tip] it becomes even more important to rip or pause when a bass starts tracking it. When I’m visiting Texas I work with the quiver of rods I have at my parents house, so I ended up using that TFO medium casting rod for everything- cranks, weightless flukes, bladed jigs, topwaters, and even live shrimp under a slip float. I upgrade a lot of my reel handles to hawgtech 110mm- especially my dedicated crankbait set ups where I’m primarily using the reel handle to impart action on the lure.

A couple pics from a crazy sesh in late March- the day started with boils everywhere so we immediately got a few topwater fish with wakebaits, walkers, and poppers. Right when the topwater bite died I found a cut where the shad were spawning- I wish could say I caught the fish pictured with lures I made, but I literally got on my belly and reached in the water shoulder deep to catch 6-7 live 4” threadfin. I didn’t weigh the largemouth but i estimate it was about 6.5, and the smallie was close to three. I also caught countless 1-2 pound striper on a shad pattern 1.5 squarebill I painted, a smallie on a med diver I foiled, and bunch of sub 18” largies and smallies on plastics. On the way back we saw a huge rattler that stopped me dead in my tracks. People talk about how camouflaged they are, but that thing looked like it was glowing UV!
