One of my few early memories of Manhattan is walking in between the World Trade Center + looking up at the two buildings. It’s an image that haunts me every time I think about 9/11.

25 years ago on 9/11/01 I was 16 years old. I was a Junior at Southampton High School + in the gym getting my class picture taken when the planes hit the World Trade. We were sent home and watched on our TVs as the buildings fell in real time. Only to watch them over and over on every news channel that day.

Two years later I ended up going to school in the Financial District only a few blocks from Ground Zero. My freshman year I attended a remembrance service where the school gave out directions to where the twin towers once stood + candles to light for all the victims lost. That same year I took a semester of an architecture walking tour class of NYC and they brought us to the church that still stood at the base of the world trade. It felt like an out of body experience to be downtown learning about this horrible tragedy in a class, after living it only 2 years before.

That day shaped our country, our world + most specifically our generation of New Yorkers. Something I don’t think will ever change, even 25 years later, even way out on Long Island in our little beach bubble.

This love story that feels a little like fate and a lot like forever. Brittany wasn’t supposed to adopt a puppy that day, and she definitely wasn’t supposed to adopt one she was allergic to! 2023 🤔

To be honest this year was pretty fuzzy! A lot of my time was spent feeling like a wallflower even though I said yes to what seems like a lot.

There were so many uncertainties, trial & error, and not knowing which direction I should go in literally all areas of my life.

I think at some point I just surrendered, took a step back, watched what unfolded in front of me, & gave myself a bit of grace (the tiniest bit).

People who went out of their way to have my back (and not so much) was definitely a recurring theme in both my personal and professional lives 🩷

These relationships that have stayed (& grown) are my silver lining on what seems like a very transformative year.
