Part 2. On this episode of my 760Li project, I finally reach the injectors after getting sidetracked cleaning a ton of surfaces, re-insulating all the exposed (and accessible at the time) wiring, and even doing a ghetto pre-clean on the injectors and HPFP. Everything got soaked in carb cleaner to start breaking down years of buildup before a deeper clean.

This is where it really hit me just how intricate this engine is—and how critical the fuel delivery system is. With those HPFPs costing around $5K each at the time, I had to be extremely careful from removal to reinstall. Present day, rebuilding them is the only route that makes sense given how insane replacement costs are.

I’ve been asked why parts for this car are so expensive, and I finally have a straightforward answer.
BMW has always pushed the envelope with each new generation—constantly refining and reinventing—unlike many manufacturers that reuse platforms and components. The 760Li was that philosophy on steroids. Not only does it feature the world’s first production direct-injection V12, but this same engine platform was shared with the Rolls-Royce Phantom through the mid-2010s. BMW increased displacement, but many core components remained the same.
That alone explains a lot about the cost of parts.

Spotted this Alpina Green Metallic gem on one of my V12 rides!

Fun fact: This G11/12 Alpina B7 was the worlds fastest sedan between 2016 and 2020 out pacing even the Hellcat Redeye!

Sporting a similar but (not to be confused) highly moddified 4.4 Liter V8. This beast boast a whopping 600 Horsepower and 590lb of torque! Thats almost 100 more hp over the standard 523 and 43 more lbs of torque over the 553lbs from the standard n63. All these improvements took the top speed froma more than respected 153mph to a hard to believe 205mph!

Funner fact: Alpina is no stranger to world records in top speed, back in the 80s all the way to 87, Alpina also held the record for the worlds fastest Sedan with the-then B7 S turbo!

Part 1. of my 2003 BMW 760Li project.

For those of you who weren’t following when I first picked up the 760Li, you can finally see just how tired that engine bay really was before I got to work on it. From missing the entire climate system under the hood to the complete engine cover assembly being gone, she was not only neglected… but straight up disrespected.

Getting that manifold off revealed years of even more neglect and oversight oil pooling on top of the valve cover itself and the gasket, buildup across the entire front of the engine, coolant stains everywhere, not to mention all the exposed wiring. The hoses were mostly intact, but definitely on borrowed time.

This is where I learned the most about the N73 V12 from its incredibly sophisticated engineering to the realization that this engine wasn’t just ahead of its time, it’s also a pain to work on, diagnose, and truly understand. Not to mention… most mechanics won’t even touch it once you say “N73.”

Sourcing parts made things even crazier. The fuel injectors alone—being part of the world’s first production direct-injection V12—run about $150 each… and you need 12. At the time the high pressure fuel pumps were a mere 5,000 a piece, but as of writing this post have soared to a dream shattering $15,000!

This project got expensive fast—faster than I was ready for.

Introduction:

Alright everyone, I know I’ve been talking about this car for some time now, and that’s because this is truly a car I’ve dreamed of owning since before I even got into BMW ownership (2015).

Now for those who aren’t aware, this car was the absolute pinnacle of automotive engineering when it hit the scene. It was the most expensive and one of the fastest BMWs available at the time (with the E39 M5 still edging it out only in acceleration).

Direct injection. Two high-pressure fuel pumps. The world’s first fiber optic communication system (MOST bus) used in a production vehicle to enable rapid data transfer across its electronics. Rear reclining seats, night vision, turn-by-turn navigation, and iDrive - arguably the first widely adopted in-vehicle infotainment system that every manufacturer now follows. Heated, ventilated, massaging, seemingly infinitely adjustable seats… the list goes on.

Groundbreaking technology that never really received the praise it deserved. (Then again… when does BMW ever get the credit it deserves for introducing innovations the entire industry later adopts?)

Enough with the history lesson — we’re talking about a 6.0L V12-powered 7 Series (sharing its DNA with the Rolls-Royce Phantom from the same era), pushing out a still-respectable 438 horsepower and 444 lb-ft of torque 💪🏾

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, I’m putting together a docu-series on this car’s journey since I picked it up in 2023. At the time, I was juggling a lot — financial responsibilities, rebuilding my E46 330Ci, maintaining my E38 740iL, and still paying a note on my then-running F10 528i… all while fighting my own battles solo. It was a very trying time in my life, and this car is going to be a big part of making it all worth it.

If you know me, then you know times were hard when I bought this car — but I pushed through the best I could, and I’m still holding onto her to this day. It’s my first V12, and the first car I’ve truly invested this much time, energy, and money into.
