Ida Hiršenfelder (beepblip), Spiral Fluctuations, chambers for multisensory listening (version 3), 2024–6

Sound is perceived by the nerves in the inner ear, but listening is by no means limited to the workings of the ear. We listen with our whole bodies, with bones and soft tissue, as well as with our attention, which is a mental process independent of mechanical perception. The often-repeated idea that we can shut our eyes but not our ears is not correct, since sound can be filtered, turned on or off, by attention. Spiral Fluctuations proposes listening and also the creation of neural networks with all senses. The composition is based on field recordings of functional brain imaging with non-invasive magnetic resonance fMRI machine that produce vibrations rather than sound. By capturing this non-ionising radio electromagnetic spectrum (between 0.5 and 7.0 Tesla or 21 MHz and 300 MHz) and translating the diagnostic method into a haptic experience, the artist explores tools for choreographing effects. Any sensation can create a feeling of presence, permeability, emotional experience, empathic influence, mental engagement, and spatial orientation. In the installation, sound is not considered in terms of auditory perception in the inner ear, but as vibration perceived through multiple senses: as vibration in the body or as pulsations of light. The chambers are simultaneously intended for the hearing as well as the deaf and hard of hearing.

Sound artist and archivist @beepblip (Ida Hiršenfelder) has begun her EMAP residency at CIKE – Creative Industry Košice.

Her practice centres on sound ecology and spatialisation, creating psychogeographical compositions and multi-sensory experiences. Working with code, electronics, analogue synths and field recordings, she explores non-human animal languages, the agency of non-organic others and ways of listening to the inaudible.

We’re looking forward to following the development of her residency in Košice.

The artists take us aboard their spaceship and lead us on a journey through the landscape of the visible, audible and sensory, where the experience of watching the dance is transferred to the entire body of the viewer. Time opens up in its certainty and through the movement of the dancers we enter the realm of kairos, time that goes beyond this moment, which invites us to surrender and opens our inner images, perceptions, relationships.

Nach drei Tagen gemeinsamen Aufbaus, der Kalibrierung und Einrichtung öffnen wir die Türen für die erste öffentliche Präsentation unseres neu gebauten 16-Kanal-OTTOsonics-Systems.

Der Abend bringt fünf Künstler*innen zusammen, die sich dem räumlichen Klang aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven nähern. Mit Live-Performances und Kompositionen erkunden sie das System als immersive Hörumgebung.

In der ersten Woche des Summer Lab 2026 tauchen wir gemeinsam aus drei unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in die Welt des räumlichen Klangs ein:

🎧 Discover Spiralna nihanja (SpiralOscillations), a sound installation by Ida Hiršenfelder (@beepblip ), at the @xcenter_novagorica @go_2025 Intermedia Gallery.
On display until early September, the installation invites visitors into an immersive multisensory sound chamber, continuing the artist’s exploration of the sounds of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Working under the artistic name beepblip, Ida Hiršenfelder creates immersive psychogeographic soundscapes using analogelectronics, modular synthesizers, field recordings, and digital sound processing. Her practice explores bioacoustics, experimental music, and sound spatialization. She studied Sonology at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.
The installation was developed in collaborationwith Igor Serša and Ana Sepe (Magnetic Resonance Laboratory, Jožef Stefan Institute) and Projekt Atol @projektatol .

Vabimo vas na otvoritev veččutne zvočne instalacije ''Spiralna nihanja'' umetnice Ide Hiršenfelder – beepblip.

Kako poslušamo, ko zvoka ne zaznavamo le z ušesi, temveč s celim telesom?

Instalacija zvok spreminja v telesne vibracije, gibanje materiala in pulziranje svetlobe ter obiskovalce vabi k drugačnemu doživljanju prostora in lastnega telesa.

Delo temelji na posnetkih delovanja naprave za magnetno resonanco, ki jih umetnica prevaja v edinstveno prostorsko in veččutno izkušnjo. Namenjeno je slušečim, naglušnim in gluhim obiskovalcem.

Pridružite se nam na otvoritvi in doživite poslušanje, ki presega sluh. ✨

The Holding Space V/A, a new compilation released by @eremit.records presents my track 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘠𝘰𝘶. I sampled some parts for the track on the streets of Budapest, and am dedicated it to persistence, struggle and holding ground.

All proceeds from the release will be split between @schwulenberatung_berlin, an organisation supporting queer and trans people through mental health counselling, housing assistance, HIV/STI care, addiction support and the creation of safe community spaces and @transakcija Ljubljana, an organisation that provides transgender information, advocates for trans rights in Slovenia, offers services for gender diverse people, tools for allies and operates in area of trans activism.

The compilation is a fruit of care of @janukrohm and @m___preis and featuring co-artists.

Nekateri prostori te preprosto … vsrkajo vase. Kot tema. In nekatere glasbe te …hm. Preoblikujejo. Ostanejo del tebe. Za dolgo.
V petek, 29. 5. 2026, v Sodnem stolpu odpiramo s kvadrofonijo za činele in elektroniko Odzivni prostori. @beepblip , @theyedoesnotsee in @jaka_berger bodo s pomnoževanjem, vzorčenjem in zankanjem z modularnimi sintetizatorji vzpostavili mrežo razraščajočih se odzivov, ki raztegujejo čas in razpirajo prostor v večplastno zvočno pokrajino. Zanke se plastijo, prekrivajo in preobražajo, medtem ko se izvajalci sproti akustično in elektronsko odzivajo na zvočne impulze ter na robu nadzora oblikujejo dinamično in organsko strukturo. Neenakomerno bomo razporejeni na sediščih, ležiščih in lebdiščih (?!). Če ste, upamo, pravkar ob prebiranju navedenega za hip odtavali v lasten domišljijski svet, vas prijazno vabimo, da sledite zajčku v njegovo luknjo. Vdih - izdih!
V drugo dejanje nas katapultirajo @thecanyonobserver , ki zlahka poskrbijo za glasbeno spremljavo vaših najhujših nočnih mor, veličastne apokalipse ali celo tradicionalnega nedeljskega kosila z družino. Od svojega kritiško hvaljenega prvenca "FVCK", ki jih je popeljal po Evropi pa vse do Kube, do zadnjega "Figura", so bend nenehne preobrazbe. S Figuro so hrupnemu električnemu arzenalu dodali saksofona, violončeli in se sprehodili med noisom, free jazzom, klasično in avantgardno glasbo. Za oddajo Izštekani so v popolnoma akustični razširjeni desetčlanski zasedbi ponovno presegli njihovo običajno žanrsko opredelitev. Prav v slednji, akustični postavi nastopijo tudi za nas!
The Canyon Observer bo s sliko opremila vizualna umetnica honda @plastic.mountain , sicer širše znana po eksperimentalni animaciji in intervencijah v javne prostore oz. kot se opiše “včasih depresivna, včasih manična ampak vedno 161!”.

Instruction: Put the headphones over your ears and a black vibrotactile pod on your body.

Listening is not just a function of the ear but a broader mental state of awareness and attention. The binaural video Spiral Fluctuations draws on recordings of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Using this medical diagnostic technology as a source, the artist translates elements of its acoustic and electromagnetic activity into a spatial sound experience that can be felt physically as well as heard. Rather than presenting the body as a set of neutral responses, the work invites emotional and sensory engagement. Sound appears here not only through the ear but through vibrations across the body or pulses of light, suggesting other ways of perceiving it, including people with hearing impairments.
