TRIGGER WARNING 💩🐢

Yesterday was wild. First I (maybe) became the first nature videographer to capture a gopher tortoise shamelessly wolfing down an entire turd in the wild. Historic af.

This was while taking a 2 mile hike through some junglish terrain right off the beach. We ended up calling this trail the poop trail because there was all kinds of scat all over the place. Some with fur in it that I’d guess was from a coyote or bobcat, but we came across one dried up pile that was big and clearly had berries in it. Being the poop expert I am it struck me as bear poop, but nah, can’t be bear. As quiet as this spot was it wasn’t at all far from civilization and it was right next to the ocean.

After the poop trail hike we drove a couple miles and found more hiking trails, super cool, even denser jungle. Made it about a mile in before coming across another undigested berry filled pile, this one extremely fresh. Let’s try Google Lens, and… 100% black bear poop. Goosebumps. We turn a corner and there’s another big wet pile, and yep those are 100% bear tracks, at least two different sizes. Trying not to panic we started debating which way to go when it struck us both that there was an overwhelming indescribable stench way too strong to just be the piles. I have no idea what bears smell like but I’m pretty sure that was it. Bear stench. The debate halted and we stomped our way back the way we came clapping our hands, talking loudly on the verge of panic attacks.

Scary experience but a cool story to tell. Yesterday was the best shitty day I’ve had in a long time. PS no idea what kind of poop that was that Mr gopher tortoise was eating, I’m not really a poop expert. taken in Sebastian Inlet State Park by @beepee82
