✨ Day Two: Mr. Tilney’s Ball ✨

Can you guess which Jane Austen movie character people thought I was? It’s definitely not who I intended to represent. 🤣

Although we were disappointed to secure tickets to only one afternoon ball (Mr. Tillney’s) we still arrived in our finest silks — determined to make the most of it. @jessstorey and I danced nearly every dance, and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.

The day began with eggs Benedict and tea at The Abbey Deli (@thebathdelico ) in the heart of Bath — the very shop featured as “Modiste” in Bridgerton. And it ended with us slipping into our red waxed canvas booties to keep the rain from spoiling our beautiful dance shoes. 🧡🕯️🎻

The last picture is of my purple and green silk fur line cloak which I absolutely adored and wish we’d gotten fancier photos of 💜

I am beyond honored to be on the cover and the featured article in the March issue of Women’sView magazine!

What a fabulous spread of amazing women in Fayetteville, NC doing really wonderful things! For me to be a part of it is just really, really special and something I don’t take lightly.

To be recognized for doing something you LOVE and that you honor your relatives and culture with . . . Well that is something that fills my heart!

This sewing break is brought to you by an upcoming 250th Rev War event at White Plains, New York with the @2njhelmscompany weekend of Oct 24th.

I forced myself away from working on novel number two (@rebeccarussellwrites ) to get some linen petticoats and wool bed gowns done because this is gonna be a COLD one folks! 🥶 And it’s been 30+ years since I’ve done Rev War or camped!

Let’s start by saying 2026 has not been an easy year. If you follow me, you have probably noticed that I have been markedly absent from social media this year. I am ok, just moving very slowly through life in this season.

I’m very happy to share with you a simple project I just completed that has filled me with joy. ♥️

This 18th C. Bedgown (pattern by @americanduchess ) in a tan and red floral print linen. Entirely hand sewn (which I admit I generally hate, but has also been extremely cathartic for me lately).

It is paired with a red linen petticoat and tan/black/red striped cotton apron all also hand sewn.

Hiding underneath are newly sewn pockets, repurposed stays from THIRTY years ago and and new linen shift. (I’ll hope to share in future posts when I have the energy to undress my lady).

If you spied it, the beautiful Dorset button brooch was made by my dear friend at @dapperdovedorsetbuttons

I am hoping to get back into some 18th C. events after a 30-year hiatus. Wish me luck! 🙏🏻♥️

I can’t help but love the amazing collar and lines on this late 1930s sun dress.

The pattern was a mashup of a few vintage patterns I had in my stash as well as some drafting as it went along. Now I just need a place to show her off!

On this fabulous late 1930s sun dress.

First of all that back! I mean you’re showing off your shoulders, your back, what’s not to love about this?

I used a vintage metal zipper and vintage brown buckle and buttons to finish it off.

Shown with white shoes but honestly . . . Brown sandals?

I made this dress several years ago as a spring/summer beachy dress and used a favorite vintage cotton fabric. It was a Franken-pattern self-drafted piece combined from 1930s and 1940s patterns (note the lovely big/long collar of the late 1930s that shows up again in late 40s and again in 60s and 70s)

It’s such a fabulous dress and now that I’m seeing it popping up in pictures again, I’m thinking I really need to come up with a reason to wear it out!

🍒 Three years ago, I made this dress for JJ Heller, and it still stands out as one of the sweetest projects to come out of my sewing room.

The pattern is McCalls 3694, a gorgeous mid-1950s design with a nipped waist, cap sleeves, and that dramatic full skirt. JJ picked out a gorgeous cherry-red polished cotton with the slightest bit of stretch — just enough to give it movement while keeping that crisp vintage silhouette.

One of my favorite details: each seam is covered with narrow velvet ribbon, giving the bodice and skirt that true midcentury richness.

Other little touches I loved:
• deep, hand-finished hem
• perfectly gathered skirt panels
• hand-covered velvet buttons, made one by one 🍒
• styled with white vintage shoes & a wicker bag, just like the pattern envelope dreamed of

Seeing JJ wear it with so much joy was an absolute maker milestone for me.

#SillySunday throwback to DC Flea — serving “Calvin Klein but make it 1890.”

I’d been hunting for a top hat forever, and when I found this one and it fit perfectly . . . home it came!

And yes, I found my dream Victorian tophat while wearing a Calvin sweatshirt. 🎩😆
