There are quite a few new faces here, so I thought I’d introduce myself again. ❤️

I’m Heather. I’ve been a nurse for over 25 years, most of that in critical care, and I currently work in a CVICU.

Watching my daughter Ava go through nursing school reminded me how much there is to learn that doesn’t always come from a textbook—and how overwhelming those first few years can feel.

A single number only tells you what’s happening right now.

When you’re looking at your patient, look backward too. Has the blood pressure been drifting down? Is the heart rate climbing? Are oxygen needs increasing? Is urine output decreasing?

Sometimes the change over time tells you more than one isolated value.

Before your next shift, remember: one number is a snapshot. A trend tells you the story.

When you’re newer, report can feel like a test of how much information you can remember.

It isn’t.

The next nurse needs to understand what matters now, what changed during your shift, what you did about it, and what still needs attention.

You’ll develop your own rhythm with experience. Until then, focus on being clear—not sounding impressive.

A patient refusing something doesn’t automatically mean they don’t understand.

Sometimes they understand perfectly—and the answer is still no.

Educate. Clarify. Make sure they understand the risks and benefits. Document the conversation. Escalate when the decision creates a safety concern or affects the plan of care.

Our job isn’t to win the argument. It’s to make sure our patients can make informed decisions about their own care.

Before your next shift, remember: respecting a patient’s choice is part of good nursing.

A surprising amount of nursing is figuring out why something isn’t working the way it should.

The IV won’t run.
The pump keeps alarming.
A number suddenly doesn’t make sense.

Experience doesn’t mean you always know the answer.

You just get better at knowing where to look.

Being corrected can sting—especially when you’re already trying your hardest.

Fix what needs fixing. Ask what you should do differently next time. Take the lesson with you.

But don’t turn one correction into proof that you aren’t capable of becoming a good nurse.

You were corrected about one thing. It was not a verdict on everything you are.

One of the most important things you can learn as a nurse isn’t on a checklist.

It’s your team.

Know who has the expertise you need—and don’t be afraid to use it. Respiratory, pharmacy, PT/OT, case management, techs, unit clerks, and the nurses around you all bring something different to patient care.

Being a good nurse doesn’t mean doing everything yourself. It means knowing when someone else can help you do it better.

Nobody really prepares you for the awkward part after a difficult patient interaction—when you still have to walk back into that room and be their nurse.

You don’t have to pretend it didn’t happen.

Sometimes you regroup. Sometimes you apologize. Sometimes you simply try the conversation again.

Learning how to repair an interaction is part of learning how to be a nurse, too.
