Behind the Knife Surgical History Sunday 📚:

From a 3-year-old lost in 1963 to an entire field built from the initial devastation — Dr. Thomas E. Starzl was one of many who normalized “impossible.” Swipe through the carousel to take a look at a few of his achievements that helped transplantation get to where it is now.

NRP or NMP for DCD livers? A national UNOS analysis of 4,632 DCD liver transplants (2022 to 2024) found both warm strategies were associated with better 1-year graft survival than super-rapid recovery with cold storage, with no clear difference between them. Retrospective, exposure inferred from timing, 1-year follow-up only. Swipe for the numbers and the limits, then read the full paper.

BTK Surgical History Sunday: Laparoscopy in 🖐️ slides or less.

It probably didn’t just start with a dog in Dresden, and it certainly won’t stop with robot-assisted surgery. Surgical technique got better with patients having quicker recovery times and better outcomes.

But every port you place today, placed yesterday, and will likely place tomorrow, stands on 120 years of bold ideas, borrowed tools, and surgeons who believed in small incisions. We’ve created a quick recap of what’s happened so far. 👆

Swipe, save, and tag a colleague who needs their surgical history fix. 📚

Of course, we acknowledge likely additional key individuals and technology were not fully covered in this post. Comment who else we should highlight for the ways laparoscopy has changed surgery, and check out our cited references to read more! 🧑‍⚕️👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

A laboratory technician at a Russian anti-plague institute died last week. Here’s what is actually known.

Darya Shipilova, 28, worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov. She was hospitalized September 29 and died early October 2. Colleagues and independent outlets report she broke a test tube of live Y. pestis on September 25. Rospotrebnadzor recorded the diagnosis as “pneumonia of unknown etiology” and says no incident involving pathogens occurred at the institute.

No public lab confirmation has been released. Three things that should be on a surgeon’s radar:
1. The bubo is a surgical problem. CDC notes that incision and drainage may be necessary if it becomes suppurative, and the aspirate is how the diagnosis gets made.
2. It is droplet, not airborne. N95s are not required for routine care of pneumonic plague, though you want a mask, eye protection and a face shield for bubo aspiration.
3. The regimen depends on the form. Doxycycline is first line for bubonic, but only an alternative for pneumonic.
