“New Mexico”, linen, silk and thread. I have access to many Asian textiles here, including traditional Japanese, Indian, Malaysian and Chinese cottons and silks. Sometimes the fabrics just look so gorgeous together that I’ve started using scraps to sew pictures. This one evokes the heat and jagged forms of the desert in New Mexico. A bit of machine stitching and a bit of hand stitching. It’s hard to photograph the shimmering luminosity of that orange fabric. It’s woven from two different oranges so it changes color when you move. by @beingcarolbowen

“An Empty Chair”. I’ve been very sad for the past weeks-my beloved aunt fell and passed away as a result. Although she was 104, I am feeling the grief intensely. We talked on the phone frequently and she always signed off with, “Whatever you do, have fun”. It’s much less fun without my Aunt Alice. I’m trying to paint again after a few weeks away from it. by @beingcarolbowen

The storm before the calm. It all looks so tidy when it’s complete but that’s not what the process looks like, at least for me. by @beingcarolbowen

Domestic drama! The light from three different sources in my living room. Some shadows are cool and some are warm depending on the nature of the light. This was in the evening with the low sunlight hitting the wall and the imminent sunset. by @beingcarolbowen

I finished my “After Balthus”. The second photo is how it looks with the light of the window shining through. I enjoyed studying Balthus’ repetition of geometric shapes throughout—squares, circles and triangles giving a hypnotic sense of rythm to the painting. The palette was very limited and emphasized the beauty of juxtaposing two opposite colors, orange and blue, and the wide range of greys achieved with this simple palette. Thank you Balthus for reminding me of the beauty of limited palettes. by @beingcarolbowen

One of my favorite paintings at the Met is “Nude in Front of a Mantel”—If I recall correctly, it is the first painting you see when you enter the Lehman Wing. I had a square canvas all stretched so I thought I’d give copying this painting a try. I’m not finished and it’s a poor copy but I am learning a lot from Balthus’ masterful composition. I thought I knew exactly how to paint that blue pitcher—but I was so wrong! So the painting will sit on its easel (my weights) and dry overnight. I’ll give it another go tomorrow. This “canvas” is actually an old silk saree—it doesnt like the paint I’m using which keeps flaking off in a beautiful way that captures some of the feeling of antiquity in the original. Wherever I drew with with a pencil, the gesso fell right off. The second image is a photo of my painting from the back. The light glows through all the translucent lines! I hope you enjoy reading a bit about my process. by @beingcarolbowen
