This tragedy won’t leave my mind.

I keep thinking about Mississippi,
about Black folks raised on front-porch prayers,
Sunday best, kitchen-table wisdom,
and the kind of love that teaches you early
how to survive a world that watches you different.

I keep hearing my mama’s voice:
“You come with who you come with,
and you leave with who you leave with.”

That’s the rule.
That’s the warning.
That’s the lesson fake friends hate,
because real folk know
not everybody smiling beside you
is meant to stand with you.

I keep thinking about your mom,
a nurse practitioner,
a woman who spent her life healing others.
I keep thinking about your family,
a two-parent household,
a home that should’ve meant safety,
should’ve meant you were covered,
should’ve meant you made it back.

So why did it end like that?

Why did the tension in that place feel so heavy?
Why did the air feel charged with old hate,
with racial lines still drawn in the dirt,
with the kind of danger Black boys in Mississippi
learn to read before they learn to drive?

You weren’t supposed to die that night.
Not like that.
Not with fake friends in the circle.
Not with people acting loyal
while betrayal was already in the room.

That’s what cuts the deepest,
the ones who hyped you up,
the ones who called you brother,
the ones who left you standing there
when the night turned deadly.

I don’t know every detail.
I only know the heartbreak,
the silence after the chaos,
the way a life can be loss
and then passed around as gossip.

But my heart aches.

This doesn’t feel real.
This doesn’t feel right.

It was only one night,
but one night was enough
to turn laughter into mourning,
and your name into a reminder
that fake love can kill
just as fast as hate, even if it ain’t.

I can’t think straight so I wrote about it introducing:MELOcholy

I remember the day the headline broke.

In my first-year law student mind,
I thought the self-defense was gon’ hold.

I knew Melo wasn’t gon’ fold.

But this the same old tale,
too old to be told.

Hang n*gga.
Lock up n*gga.
Throw away the key.

Now I’m walking around sad,
people asking what’s wrong with me.

I can’t even answer,
‘cause if I do, I’ma scream.

I can’t say I’m sad.
I can’t say I’m mad.

Maybe I’m MELOcholy.

I will never unsee his face.

I will never unhear
the word “guilty”
echoing from the local news channel.

I’m truly devastated.

He look like me.

He look like my brothers.

He look like my cousins.

And somehow,
I feel like I love him.

I cried for the first time today.

I couldn’t cry yesterday,
because I was angry.

Grief almost took over me.

I went to bed
thinking it was a dream.

But I woke up
and the verdict was still there.

And I’m still—

MELOcholy.

Today, I feel like Mona. Ima masterpiece, beautifully and wonderfully made. #25thbirthday #monalisa
Watch me
not as spectacle,
but as scripture still being written.
I was raised where whispers carried thunder,
a minister’s child learning
how to hold fire in folded hands,
how to call trembling grace.
They said: be good.
Be balanced.
Don’t spill.
And I tried, Lord knows I tried
walking the tightrope between halo and hunger,
still asking
am I enough,
or just well rehearsed?

Snap.
Jayshon
soft face, sharp spirit.
Pretty like Sabbath morning,
dangerous like truth.
Different
set apart,
stand alone,
stand in power.

Switch.
I was innocent
heart wide like church doors.
Trusted easy.
Loved deep.
Then life reached in
took softness early,
left me learning boundaries like scripture.
After that
I gave myself away in pieces:
time like tithe,
attention like offering,
my body like confession
hoping someone would call it holy.
Church said surrender.
World heard access.

Switch.
Marc kept the smile polished.
Jayshon carried the ache pretty.
Still asking
why does being chosen feel like exposure?

Triple truth:
I was searching,
I was surviving,
I was still sacred.

Snap.
Look
I’m beauty with memory.
Soft but not simple.
Gentle but not easy.
Sometimes I ask God
you made me like this on purpose, right?
And peace whispers
yes.

So watch me
not performing perfection,
performing return.
Mind back.
Body back.
Spirit back.
Marc.
Jayshon.
Whole.
Still soft.
Still chosen.
Still me.
Sometimes I feel like Marilyn Monroe
I can be impatient.
I make mistakes.
I get low
searching for light.
I rise high
almost afraid of the fall. taken in Louvre Museum Paris by @beingmarcjay

Grad Day Dumpskiiii❤️💪🏿👑
Praise God ! Thank you to my mama and my daddy! My siblings. Friends. Loved ones. And shoutout to me, for doing what my first advisor at JSU looked me in the face and told me I couldn’t! My advice to the young people is when they tell you that you can’t show them you will!

Never got anything less than a B and have less than 6 of those! 🤩🍵

Yeaaaa now time to start looking for Professor jobs🤭🤭 who is hiring?

Last day of my second year of law school.

I practiced: General, Family and Administrative Law. Several clients. Went to trial. Many lessons. Many wins. Still standing. Still rising. Plenty motion. Onward and upward.

WASHINGTON, D.C. The “Mister and Miss” HBCU tradition has officially arrived at the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law! We are honored to introduce Marc J. Hawk III as the inaugural Mister UDC Law for the 2026–2027 academic year.

A Chicago native raised in Huntsville, Alabama, Marc is a proud Oakwood University alumnus and a second-year law student who understands that leadership is about more than a title it’s about a movement. By establishing the Mister UDC Law legacy, Marc is building a culture of pride, visibility, and excellence that will inspire generations of future legal advocates.

A NATIONAL VOICE FOR HBCU LAW STUDENTS. Marc isn’t just leading on campus; he’s leading the nation. He currently serves as the Law Student-at-Large on the American Bar Association (ABA) Board of Governors. In this historic role, he is:
• The first HBCU law student to ever hold the position.
• The youngest member in the room on the ABA’s national policy-making body.
• A fierce advocate for all six HBCU law schools in the country.

THE VISION: NO ONE SUFFERS IN SILENCE. Marc’s platform is a call to action. From Mental Health Advocacy through “Check On Your People” initiatives to Bridging the Gap between alumni and evening students, Marc is ensuring that every voice at UDC Law is heard and every student is supported.

With his sights set on becoming a Public Defender, Marc is already proving that his commitment to justice starts with the community he serves today.

Congratulations to Marc J. Hawk III on this historic appointment!
