The Artist Way Week 4: recovering a sense of integrity

I’m at a place now where I genuinely look forward to my morning pages and my artist dates. Even during a week when life was a little crazy, one of the things I was excited about was my next artist date and what little adventure I can take myself on 🥰

Artist Date: finishing abandoned crafts ✨🧵🪡🌈 my takeaways this week:

✨Sometimes a date looks like quiet time at home - uninterrupted - to do anything you want. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, you don’t have to get dressed. It’s just nonnegotiable time you commit to you. 💕

✨I first made these felt clouds to sell with my children’s book (@littlenanacooks) but I’m reminded that I just love cute shit. And I don’t have to sell all the cute shit I make. I can just make them to keep for myself .

✨Cute little crafts + hot tea + rnb music = *chefs kiss*

Artist Date: reading at the park

Here are my take aways from this little date:

✨I need to do this more. Sit outside. Read outside. Eat outside. Lay outside. Just be outside. It was refreshing and stress relieving and expansive. And yet I make it feel like such a difficult thing to do. Just get outside.

✨Jessie Reyez is QUEEN. Reading her poetry book reminded me that creativity is driven by anything and everything. This includes sadness as much and joy and that is still beautiful 💕

✨I am reminded that I am a great one. And there is more greatness to come.

In September I started #TheArtistWay (again) and if you don’t know the artist way is 12 week of exercises for the blocked (or unblocked) creative/artist. There are 3 main components of The Artist Way:

1. Morning Pages - journaling 3 pages of brain dump first thing in the morning.
2. Artist Date - once a week you take yourself on a solo date that sparks your creativity, fun, and/or joy.
3. Weekly Tasks - Assignments for the week that relate to that week’s chapter.

This week for my Artist Date I went to my local library and spent time reading children’s books. And here are my take aways:

✨ Local libraries are so underutilized!!! And it’s truly quite sad. They’re amazing spaces that are completely free to use and have many free resources. Not only do they have books, but you can spend the day there reading all day if you want. They have life skills trainings, launguage classes, workshops - all for free! GO TO YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY YALL 💕
✨ Children’s books are meant for everyone. EVERYONE. Children’s books are filled with pure joy, silliness, art, imagination, and the best life lessons and reminders for any age. It reminded me that sometimes life is just that simple. And joy is just that simple.
✨just because I’m not the successful fulltime artist that I’ve dreamed of today, doesn’t mean I will never be. In today’s age we are in such a rush to be the best version of ourselves, have the 6 figure business, be free from any adversity that we forget things just take time. And I read a children’s book about a girl’s grandpa who is a watercolor artist (what a coincidence because that’s what I want to be!) and it reminded me that I have all the time in the world to become the artist I dream of. All the more reason to really enjoy where I am now. 💕

And funny thing is, my artist date took me 30mins. 30 mins. So this is your reminder and mine, that you don’t need hours to do something for yourself. Take advantage of any time that you have, because you’re worth it. 🫶

Artist Way Week 2 reflection coming soon ☺️

Blending complementary colors Blue and Orange today 💙🐬🧡🐅

This one was pretty difficult because I felt like it was getting a murky brown in the middle, so it took me going back and forth a few times to get it to a place I was happy with ☺️

Blending red into green ❤️🍓💚🍏

First day of blending complementary colors - colors opposite each other on the color wheel! These are more difficult to blending because if the colors mix together too much in the blending process then the colors will turn brown 🥴

Blending blue and purple 💙🦕💜👾

The purple came out a lot darker I originally planned. Oopsie 🤷🏻‍♀️
