15 years ago, I went off to another ordinary day of 4th grade, unknowingly about to endure what would occur just hours later: a long walk in an elementary school hallway & hospital parking lots, blurry sounding & life changing news, and just the beginning of a quiet yet loud grief for a small town family. It was all so confusing and final feeling.

The same mom who laughed so hard at Junie B Jones books that she couldn't keep reading, who didn't care too much about a messy house, ate cucumbers with vinegar while grading papers and cooking supper every night - was actually gone.

She carried me through creek parties, early morning soccer games, a flooded rv site, and my barefoot self at the grocery store. Our last summer family trip was in Charleston, and she sat on the beach contently while we rode bikes and I couldn't wait to show her a huge conch shell I found. She found simple joy in watching her family grow and be happy.

I miss her. It's an ebb and flow of an ache. Most days it's normal. Other days I can feel her absence more heavily and the loss of what my life could've been. I miss the tight hugs, the giggles, the secret surprises, roadtrips and the intentional fun she brought to our little lives out in the country.

I could go on and on about what I've learned in the past 15 years, about how I've grown, & what's changed and what's stayed the same - but really, the main message is this: by true miracle and God's great grace, this deep pain and sadness continues to bring me closer to Christ.

It's undeniable that as I'm broken down, I find myself at the feet of Jesus again and again. And there's no where I'd rather lay down to rest and find joy again.
