What if your partner doesn’t have to be your best friend?

Years ago, when I was still working as a wedding translator, I was helping the father of a groom, both surgeons, prepare his rehearsal dinner speech.

During our conversation, he mentioned a study about marriage, friendship and well-being. Naturally, I asked him for it!! He wrote down the name of the resesrcher and then I found it online!

I remembered that conversation for years. Recently, I went looking for the study again and found myself reading more findings about the subject.

And since Colombia celebrates Día del Amor y la Amistad in September, I thought: why not share it?
After all, Colombian couples are getting the best deal this year: Valentine’s Day in February and Amor y Amistad in September. Two excuses to celebrate love, two chances to see your friends, and hopefully twice the champagne.🥂💙💙

The research is more nuanced than the usual “my partner is my best friend” cliché.

One study found an association between greater well-being and having more than one high-quality relationship. A newer study looked specifically at romantic partners who are also best friends, and found interesting differences in companionship and social support.

What if your wedding ceremony was never meant to be the point?

After creating ceremonies for couples from different cultures, I’ve learned that the most authentic weddings begin somewhere else: with two people deciding how they actually want to live together.

One couple once told me: " Your wedding lasts a day. Your marriage gets the rest."

A sequence played backwards and forwards↔️

Creativity manifests uniquely for each individual during the design of a wedding ceremony in Cartagena de Indias.

Apart from laying the foundations remotely, the true challenge is ensuring that all elements share a unified perspective.

Harmonizing philosophies, expectations, time zones, and emotions can be quite difficult, especially when the ultimate goal is to unite hearts in one synesthetic experience spoken in two languages.

Fortunately, in the uniqueness of creativiy and collaboration where there’s a will, there’s a way. One that we (The Almighty tripod) certainly built during the process of this wedding ceremony.

And with this... we close this altar, but the story remains open.

Gabi & Brendan deserve a lifetime of prosperity, happiness, and connection with nature.
They teach us to love ourselves the way we love the very idea of love.
To honor and be grateful for those who walk alongside us.

To cherish nostalgia, embrace the present, and look forward to growing together.
To discern between root problems and branch problems.

To stay clear and focused on our shared purpose, and no matter what challenges lie ahead, to envision ways to overcome them. Because, sometimes, we discover the answer by dreaming of a better world.

It will always be my favorite part.

To me, Love Realities are meaningful, not only are they the core of any wedding ceremony I help create, but also the real exposure of the soul.

You might think " I don't see how hard can it be to read some words."
And you are right, reading "some words" is way too easy... but expressing your Love Realities hits different.

Only when you are there, at the altar, surrounded by an unthinkable amount of emotions, then you get it.

This is why Gaby and Brendan devoted their hearts and souls exclusively to this part of the ceremony.

They understood these were not mere words.
Their Love Realities had to sound, breathe, live, look like them... and oh, boy! They ate!!

Once I heard those love realities,
I could not think of anything else.
They had gotten under my skin.

Would you believe me if I told you the Gallagher brothers from Oasis put aside their differences, just to compose and teach me the lyrics of an unprecented song dedicated exclusively for Gaby & Brendan?

OK, Fine, don't believe... I know what I saw, the multiple trips to Manchester, the long hours trying to get them on a zoom call without all the fuzz.

The haters will say I just made this up, but... haters gonna hate and ain'ters gonna ain't! 😎

And no, you cannot have the lyrics they belong to the couple! 😏

Jokes aside, this moment of integration in the ceremony was made possible thanks to the creative spirit of this couple, they encouraged me to walk the extra mile by constantly keeping an open mind and expecting the best from my process.

This is when I decided to compose a short verse for Gaby & Brendan with the help of a friend - @ismaelfsp01 -

not only is he a talented musician who arranged the musicalization of my words but also someone who gets excited with these type of process.

Sacred Element: COMMUNITY

This part was the quintesence of their ceremony. Their devotion to the meaning of lineage and friendship is unmatched.

Once you are welcomed, you are part of their clan... I know the feeling first hand.

For Gaby & Brendan the ceremony had to honor both their ancestors, cultures and languages.

Although most of their guests spoke both languages, it was an absolute act of hospitality include translation so everybody felt integrated.

When asked why was it important to have a bilingual ceremony, the bride replied:

" In our household you always hear Spanglish [...] and while many speak and understand English fluently, si no hay un toque de español, no se siente bien."

All blessings were offered solely in English, as requested by the couple.

This kiss is not merely a closing; it is the representation of all the energy, all the spoken promises, our remote meetings and, even those unexpected aspects of the ceremony, that contributed to all the PREMA created for you both. As a Celebrant, I also had the big responsibility to be the conductor of this emotional journey, ensuring that the climax was a true, memorable declaration of your Love Realities and integration of your now bigger and multicultural community of loved ones.
Even today, when I look at this pic, and remember our creative process, still feel that electricity in the room and the way that kiss stopped time forever.
Congrats, you made it, and should be proud of all your accomplishments!

El imán de JuanPa tenía toda la fuerza dirigda a los labios de Kalyn, fue increíble como en pocos segundos después de mi proclamación, dos fueron uno. Este beso no es un final; representa toda la energía, la versión auténtica de sus promesas y el PREMA que creamos. Más que su Celebrante, pude ser la conductora de ese viaje emocional, asegurando que el clímax fuera una declaración memorable de la "Realidad" de su amor y la conformación de su ahora renovada comunidad multicultural de seres queridos.
