I recently crossed this land to make my grandchild’s personal acquaintance.
It wasn’t that long of a wait, if 5 years qualifies as a brief interlude.
For, until my son met the Andromeda to his Perseus, grandmotherhood wasn’t necessarily in the cards for me.
I welcomed the news with mixed emotion, vanity prodded by the inevitable implications of aging , awaited the birth itself anxiously, then, from afar, settled under his parents’ online photo album tree, devouring visuals that dropped from the digital branches as he grew from newborn squiggler to a robust, smiling tequeño.
Would we hit it off energetically, I wondered .
Despite some fumbles evoking desperate wails over slow-moving milk bottles, I think we did. On our last stroll à deux, hours evaporated as I gleefully maneuvered his pram over steep sidewalks , floated in and out of shops in crisp California sunshine, pausing to select crystals, admire street-art murals, local foliage, and finally, sample the sounds of a dozen Tibetan singing bowls. As a parting gift, he now has his own singing bowl- in the key of B. Along with his loving parents, may he grow in perfect mindfulness and deep compassion, always anchored in a peaceful heart.

Yesterday I had another birthday.
I’m not ungrateful. I just never expected to be here still. Take me back 40 years, sparkling in a midnight-blue sequined strapless dress under flashing lights, bejeweled hand-embroidered Venetian spike heels at rest, as I lay supine on a dance floor having a psychedelic after-hours tête-à-tête w God.
God asked me to behave. It took me awhile, but I kind of did, and here I am. Down one child, up a grandchild and a daughter in-love, dogless,
motherless, fatherless, partnerless, but feeling as loved by those I see, hug and talk with, as by those in the Unseen .
I have a safe roof overhead, a cool 9 to 5, make some music, am not too fat though not thin enough, and can still don heels to walk a hot block. I’m a grandmother for heaven’s sake - wondering if I could even visit the Japanese lands where I hear wearing fragrance is tabu.
I miss my mommy, numbers can be scary,
Blood family, chosen family, beautiful people ebbing and flowing across the kaleidoscopic shores of this life. I now wear Magic like my ruffled red dress, gifted with love for this special occasion. To be continued.
