Dear world, My birthday wish is... WORLD PEACE.

May all of us recognise our similarities more than our differences.

May we appreciate what we have than what we have not.

May we spend more time on what we love than what we hate.

May we see life as a limited span than unlimited expense.

Shall we agree to disagree?
Shall we agree we live just once?
Shall we agree that therefore we need to make this once count.

May those I love always be happy. May those who have lost, heal and regain.

May kindness be bestowed upon those who lost their way and may life reflect its karma on those who deserve it.

但愿我们爱多于恨
但愿我们适当多于过分
但愿我们珍惜多于抛弃
但愿我们知意多于得意
但愿我们没有我和你
但愿我们允于世界和平
我的生日愿望仅是我们与这大世界同存仅矣

Random throws from my Uluru trip in August. It isn't often I don't add a filter or clean up my photos a little. But every photo here is as good as it gets and seriously the sun did the absolute perfect beautification job.

I do have quite a bit of food for thought on that trip, but I'll leave it for the next post when I have a bit more mind space. For now, please enjoy the beauty and spirituality that nature brings.

Thanks to boss @limteck2001 from @cloverfilmssg for the tickets tonight, at the merit of @dannyyeo_yangjunwei. I really quite enjoyed @marklee4444's stand-up at MBS! It also happens to be the 58th birthday of the protagonist! 祝本土天王生快！

This photo warrants a post because I was acquainted with Boss Lim in 2002, when I was just 21 years old. At that time, I was the fanclub leader of Vicky Zhao (yep, surprise fun fact for you 😂) and I approached Shaw Theatres to coordinate a fan meet for《天下无双》and Boss Lim was the person-in-charge. Another fun fact, Mr. Danny Yeo was then the emcee for this very event at Bishan Junction 8 🤣. Even the best scriptwriter could not have written what would then happen for the next 24 years. We've crossed paths multiple times in various capacities over the past 2 decades but never took a photo together. From the time we've all had thick black hair, all our hairs are now naturally tinted in shades of silver. So here's a picture for the diary. Every friendship and every acquaintanceship becomes serendipity after it has lived its longevity.

At the invite of @nacsingapore, together with Justin Deimen representing @iti_sg and also Goldfinch Holdings, we joined Lynette Pang, deputy CEO of NAC, on day 3 at @matters.asia, discussing about Art as Cultural Enterprise. A couple of interesting parts we discussed given our multiple hats. One is when or what aspect of art and culture should be funded by public or philanthropic money and when should brands and corporates come in. For art and culture to be sustainable and developed well enough to gain value as a currency, we must involve all parties. But truth to be told, no investor likes to pay for the grind, which are the operations, the admin, the boring parts of the support system. If we see culture as public infrastructure, then we must agree this is a shared cost and shared responsibility. This is why public and philanthropic money need to come in to build the people, the resource and the system. Then at a project execution or go-to-market level, the brands and corporates need to come in to make happen, the IP value of art and culture so it can take wings. The other question is, what do we see are upcoming trends or opportunities — my point is nonprofit can and must work more closely with for-profit. But we must also try to understand the language of both so we can align mission and business goals. These are all topics that could go on for hours and at length if it was a closed door session. Interesting and intriguing. The 3 of us agree it deserves a part 2!

Thanks again for having me, most importantly it was fun. I also thank the various folks in the audience for coming up to me for extended discussions. There's more we can do together.

I found the artist who stresses me the most — Sol Lewitt. Within my first 10 minutes browsing the exhibition, immediately my hair stood and I felt goosebumps rushing to my skin, a surge of numbness crept up my neck. Oh gosh, all these mathematically precised instructions. I can see why he's doing what he does. As he said, "The idea becomes a machine that makes the art." So each piece of work is his work authored by his precision but yet they are made by the artists who interpreted his instructions . And since every site is different, the end presentation of each piece becomes site specific and unique, that cannot be fully replicated. This makes the work permanent yet impermenant at the same time. To me, the artwork is not the shapes that make it, it's the lightly written penciled instructions next to the drawn shapes, that compel you to squint your eyes to read. Ultimately, Lewitt challenges us to ponder — is art solely confined to objects or does art happen in the instance (my) goosebumps appear?

But yes, I feel extremely stressed nonetheless, it is proven that my body responds to math, and never quite positively 😓. Thanks Sol Lewitt, now I'll always remember you and your works.

Random throws from Seoul/Gwangju — There was this really nice coffee place just steps from the accomodation. I really wanted to try. So I paid for my coffee but the Uber came just a minute right after booking. Car's there, beans ain't grinded. So I told the owner I will come back tomorrow for my coffee and for the next two days, our schedules just didn't match. On the last day in Seoul, I gave it a final shot and HE WAS OPEN! They specialise in drip coffee. And here's me getting my $5 fix.

While @kukri_curator and I were on our way to the STPI booth at Seoul Frieze looking for @debbyartfocus and Jayme, they found us instead!

My schedule only has my first night open. So I had to make time to drop by @brad_kim.perfect_days. Bought a bottle of our very own @brassliondistillery Butterfly Pea flower gin as a gift. It was also my first time having it. It was actually surprisingly nice! Rounds were given to customers and everyone loved it!

Thank you for the wonderful time again. And for the cute bottle of Yamazaki souvenir!

Er.... I sort of found time to go AGAIN on my last day in Seoul. I just had to say goodbye to the vibes.

Hello Gwangju!!! The sun is blazing and we can barely keep our eyes open. But it was a beautiful morning after the rains in Seoul and we were all pumped up! Very eager to see what greets us! (Biennale afterthoughts in previous post).

TOMO-SAN @tomoya_iwta !!!! This crazy Japanese curator was one of the most fun friends I got to know. He's spontaneous, eccentric and truly life of a partyyyyyyy... Would love to see his curation sometime, I'm sure it will be full of surprises like him.

After 3 days of kimbap, both @kukri_curator and I wanted a proper meal. So I decided to bring her to a luxurious hwae meal. Gwangju's food is beyondddddd amazzzzzzzingggg.... The side dishes buffet was not just insane but also insanely good. We ate soooooooo much, we didn't know how we managed!

This is one of my favourite to order. Mul-hoe (말회) which is cold raw fish soup. This contains multiple types of raw fish, abalone, sea squirts and lots of veg with a slightly acidic uamami cold soup. I asked for 2 portions of somen (which t by @belindaang

You must change your life 너는 네 삶을 바꿔야 한다. It was a rather 'in-your-face' title, prompting the audience to be first sceptical before they even entered. It is interesting to see how as an audience, we change as the narrative progresses. Gallery 1 starts with a bold resin installation that sets an audacious tone yet it was so elegantly and coherently placed it's hard to hate it. It first sets the stage to how diverse the rest of this Biennale was going to be in terms of not just representative cultures but also across mediums and textures. It describes simply, the molecular existence of it-is-what-it is. As we walk into Gallery 2, the vibe instantly changes, into one that's more intimate. It brings us back to self and our lenses of our relationships, and here's where we witness the work of Singapore's own Amanda Heng's 'Another Woman' that spans across 2 decades. The curation quietly breaks down the barrier of its audience, as each work is given space to connect and breathe with every visitor. Gallery 3 brings both a sense of peace and discomfort with our environments, how legacy is both a blessing and a colonisation yet it is with legacy of those before us that we build meanings. Gallery 4 expands to the cosmos, beyond what is within our control or consciousness. It's a set of assumptions without answers. This space is challenging because of the number of videos with sound, yet it was able to maintain its closeness with each audience without the distraction. Then we move into the final and public gallery that aims to reset these learnings. We end where we start, but are we the same person who stepped into that door initially? As we move with the flow and react to the beats, did we actually change unknowingly? Therefore, we must change our lives. Whether you choose to or not.

It was an awakening and aesthetic experience. Thank you and congratulations to Ho Tzu Nyen. I know it's really on your own merit but you've done Singapore proud. I was very moved by the Biennale. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Doh Ho Suh was ethereal, but ultimately, it was a head of blood that enthralled.

Marc Qinn’s iconic “Self” – made from a cast of his head and filled with 10 pints of his blood – retains its power to move and mesmerise, 35 years after it was made.

Beyond the three art fairs and two biennales (three actually, to count Jeju) happening now in Korea, there’s still so much more art to savour in the museums, galleries and alternative art spaces this month.

From the Sol Lewitt survey at Amorepacific Museum of Art, to Do Ho Suh at MMCA and Yang Ah Ham’s “Undefined Panorama” at Art Sonje, several excellent temporary exhibitions took the highlight of Seoul’s “must-see”.

Yet it was the permanent collection housed in the crypt-like maze of Arario Museum in Space that surprised and utterly delighted, with its twists and turns (literally so)! Housed in a landmark building designed by Kim Swoo-geun, the works spanned YBAs, contemporary Asian and southeast Asian artists, along with Korean masters.

It’s been a fantastic, if intense, art-week with my Artery CEO and co-founder, Belinda @belindaang in Korea ⚡️

Also got out to a market though, and loved that chicken “installation” 😂 🐓 by @belindaang

There were – quite literally – rock stars 🗿, in the 16th Gwangju Biennale (!), manifesting in the form of volcanic rocks from Jeju, sited in multiple spaces across the exhibition halls.

The biennale was led by Artistic Director Ho Tzu Nyen – a Singapore artist – and his keen artistic sensibility shows.

It was a poetic hang, with generous space for works to be themselves, yet also sited in thoughtful conversation with other pieces. The sensitivity to material and space was a pleasure to encounter.

Much attention has centred on the biennale’s title, “You Must Change Your Life”. Rather than strident injunction, the works here uttered it in more nuanced, if quiet, tones and tenor. They suggest there is more than one way to compel change, even in turbulent times.

And tomorrow: Busan! by @belindaang

@weareartery greeted the public for the first time at the @singaporegallerymonth as the co-organiser for the launch party and panel. Thanks to Audrey and @agas.sg for keeping us in mind and inviting us to the occasion. I have heard a lot about how much of an art lover our first lady, Ms. Jane Ittogi is. She was the only guest who was profusely making notes as the panel went on. She also took time talking to our artists, and learning about what exactly it is that Artery does. Deeply appreciate her genuinity and sincerity. It's also a rare occasion where our entire team turned up and we finally stole a proper picture together.

Friends have asked how I felt after the launch was announced publicly in July. I feel — my honeymoon is over. And work has officially started. Looking forward to making waves together with my team and the amazing artists we work with.

More to be shared in the month ahead!

Happy 30th Friendship Anniversary!!! I don't think my friends know how much I adore them. Because we've been friends for so long,we often don't remember to spend time maintaining our friendship. While all of us are busy, I tend to be the one with the most work unpredictability and volatility, wildest widest groups of friends, a lala land idealist, an ever child trapped in an adult's body — still living like I am 18 (sometimes 8). So many-a-times, I fall out of their conversations. Nonetheless, I hope it's obvious I love them all the same though mutuality is not a guarantee 😜.

We don't have that many more thirty years. One more cycle if we are lucky. So as our knees fall apart, and our eyesight fails us, I hope we can still be a threesome till the end of life's journey.

Now, where shall we go for our 40th year anniversary?
