Sexual assault awareness month is April, but I feel now is a good time to share my story. I have debated sharing this for a while, but over the years I have found that I am not alone. And if my story can make someone else feel less alone, then it will have been worth it.

When I was around five years old, a teenage boy sexually assaulted me. I still remember every moment and detail; it will be burned into my brain forever. The confusion and anxiety consumed me for years. I was too young to understand. There were days I could get through easily, and others when I couldn’t focus in school and would lie awake at night wondering “why?” Years later, I finally gathered the courage to speak up about it. His punishment was that he owed me an apology.

That experience is something I have had to live with almost my entire life, and is something that is stuck with me forever. It often makes me wonder how many other young girls and women have dealt with the same. How many were too afraid to speak. And when they did, were silenced to protect the abuser. This topic will forever enrage me, because I know exactly what it feels like to have a piece of you stripped away forever. I remember what it’s like to feel completely sick in your stomach over a small inconvenience during the day. Maybe it was a joke someone said. Or maybe it was someone you thought you saw.

One in five women have experienced completed or attempted rape. And for men, one in six. It is more common than you think, which is extremely sad, but the truth. You are not alone. Never hesitate to ask for help.
