Beth Cunningham's enchanting paper dress sculptures, 'La Noble Femmes du Chateau', celebrate the resilience and strength of the noble women who once inhabited the historic 14th century Chateau de Cerisay. Inspired by her residencies at Atelier AIR, Beth embarked on a transformative journey of self-discovery and artistic growth, driven by a desire to create work that embodies depth, femininity, structure, charisma, and vibrancy. As she pondered the lives of the women who once walked the chateau's stone floors, worked in the kitchen, and tended to the gardens, Beth found herself drawn to the stories of the noble women who oversaw the daily activities. The result is a stunning collection of eight dresses, each approximately 20 inches tall, crafted from layered toile tissue and rice paper, and adorned with intricate embroidery, beads, appliqué, and delicate buttons. #GangGangGallery #lapetitjournal #atelierair #fiberartist #PaperArtistry by @bellabethvt

Inspired by the 14th-century Chateau de Cerisay, I created papers reflecting my French experience. Toile de jouy, an 18th-century fabric known for pastoral scenes, was a natural fit. Having studied textiles, I appreciated its intricate designs on cotton and linen. Using tissue paper with similar imagery in multiple colors, layered with rice paper, I crafted a strong paper suitable for manipulation. This process led to the creation of a red, white, and black dress during my 2025 residencies. After choosing bedrooms at the chateau, i was ready to claim my studio space . I chose the Billards Room…floor to ceiling windows looking out on yard and the moat beyond. (David, have you found a “moat cleaner?)

In my process of creating my paper dresses, the creation of the paper is the first step. After covering the floor and tables, my supplies were assembled and work commenced. Layering tissue papers and rice papers after they have been coated with a starch, and folded and crushed to strengthen the paper, I use medium to adhere the layers. #lapetitjournal #atelierair #gangganggallery #texasartist #PaperArtistry #fiberartist by @bellabethvt

The countdown is here. My work is complete. Now it’s time to think about the amazing journey that began a year ago on a train ride from Paris to La Mans, France. 🇫🇷 I focused on 2 ladies with huge suitcases on the train. One was a banana yellow…I knew a kindred soul was on the train.

My studio calls me early each morning to work. I’ll be exhibiting my newest versions of “toile de jouy” paper dresses inspired by my Spring ‘24 Atelier Artist in Residence program in France.
